Johnny Carson (1925–2005) was an iconic American television host, comedian, and writer, widely regarded as the “King of Late Night.” Born in Corning, Iowa, and raised in Nebraska, he served in the Navy during World War II before launching his career in radio and early television. After stints as a writer for Red Skelton and host of the game show Who Do You Trust?, he took over as host of NBC’s The Tonight Show in 1962, succeeding Jack Paar. For the next 30 years until his retirement in 1992, Carson defined the late-night talk show format with his sharp monologues, witty interviews, celebrity guests, and signature charm, drawing millions of viewers nightly and launching the careers of countless comedians. His cool, understated style made him a cultural institution, earning him numerous awards, including the Presidential Medal of Freedom.
