13 O’Clock Episode 460: SS Women – Female Concentration Camp Guards

During World War II, several thousand women served as concentration camp guards in Nazi Germany, particularly within the SS women’s auxiliary. These female guards—known as Aufseherinnen—were deployed mainly in camps like Ravensbrück (a women’s camp), Auschwitz, Bergen-Belsen, and Majdanek. Recruited largely from working-class backgrounds, many were trained at Ravensbrück before being assigned to other camps. While some acted under orders, many participated willingly in brutal acts, including beatings, selections for the gas chambers, and other atrocities. Notorious female guards like Irma Grese, Maria Mandl, and Ilse Koch became infamous for their cruelty. After the war, some were tried and executed for war crimes, but many others evaded justice. Their role highlights the active participation of women in the Nazi regime’s machinery of genocide.

Genghis Khan, born as Temujin around 1162 in the steppes of Mongolia, rose from humble beginnings to become one of history’s most formidable conquerors. Orphaned at a young age, he endured hardship and tribal conflict before uniting the Mongol clans under his leadership. In 1206, he was proclaimed Genghis Khan, meaning “universal ruler,” and began a series of military campaigns that created the largest contiguous empire in history, stretching from China to Eastern Europe. Known for his innovative military strategies, use of psychological warfare, and merit-based leadership, he reshaped the political and cultural landscape of Eurasia. Genghis Khan died in 1227, but his legacy lived on through his descendants, who continued to expand the Mongol Empire and influence global history for centuries.

13 O’Clock Episode 458: The Skull and Bones Secret Society

Skull and Bones is one of the most well-known and secretive collegiate societies in the United States, founded in 1832 at Yale University by students including William Huntington Russell and Alphonso Taft (father of President William Howard Taft). Often referred to as “The Order” or “The Brotherhood of Death,” the society selects about 15 Yale seniors each year, typically those who show strong leadership, influence, or prominence on campus. The society is famous for its strict secrecy, mysterious initiation rituals, and exclusive meetings held in a windowless, mausoleum-like building on Yale’s campus known as “The Tomb.” Members, known as “Bonesmen,” maintain lifelong ties and often go on to hold powerful positions in politics, business, and law. Notable alumni include Presidents William Howard Taft, George H. W. Bush, and George W. Bush, as well as former Secretary of State John Kerry. Because of its secrecy and elite membership, Skull and Bones has been the subject of numerous conspiracy theories, with claims of global political influence and connections to the CIA. The society has also been a recurring theme in pop culture, portrayed in books and films such as The Skulls and often cited in discussions of elite American institutions.
