13 O’Clock Episode 395: A History of Stockton State Insane Asylum

The Stockton State Hospital, formerly known as the Stockton State Insane Asylum, was built in 1853 and was California’s first facility for housing the mentally ill. But like most such facilities at this point in history, conditions in the hospital were less than ideal and may have included forced labor, sterilization, electroshock therapy, lobotomies, and perhaps burial in mass graves. In 2005, in fact, one of these mass graves was discovered on the grounds, and it’s believed that more than 4,000 patients were disposed of, unidentified, in just this way. Join Tom and Jenny on a fascinating journey through the history of the treatment of the mentally ill on this insanely troubling episode 395.

13 O’Clock Episode 394: Harry Edward Greenwell – The Days Inn Killer, aka The I-65 Killer

Between 1987 and 1991 in the American Midwest, an unknown individual was prowling Interstate 65 in Indiana and Kentucky, raping and murdering at least three women in roadside motels. The perpetrator, variously known as The Days Inn Killer or the I-65 Killer, remained at large for years, and it wasn’t even until 2008 that authorities linked the crimes and realized they were dealing with a serial killer. Sadly, by the time he was identified via DNA as Kentucky railroad worker Harry Edward Greenwell, the monster was already dead, having succumbed to cancer in 2013 while living a normal, quiet life in Iowa. Join Tom and Jenny as they discuss another of America’s “forgotten” serial killers on the road trip nightmare known as Episode 394.
