13 O’Clock Episode 364: Florida Killer Gerard John Schaefer

Though he’s not all that well known nowadays, likely serial killer Gerard John Schaefer was once called one of the sickest killers in the country by an FBI agent who worked his case. Ultimately convicted of “only” two murders in 1973, authorities suspect he may be responsible for as many as 26 more; Schaefer himself claimed that number to be more than 80. Working as a sheriff’s deputy in Florida, Schaefer easily picked up his victims under the guise of helping them, after which he would bind them, rape them, and either strangle or shoot them. Schaefer himself was murdered by another inmate in 1995, and good riddance, really. Join Tom and Jenny on this Florida-specific tale of horror on a murderous episode 364.

Very recently, the American media has been preoccupied with the case of Carlee Russell, the Alabama woman who claimed to have been abducted in July of 2023, only to later admit she’d made up the whole story. But Carlee’s hoax is not unique, and there have in fact been scores of people who faked their own kidnappings, for reasons ranging from mental illness, attempts at receiving a ransom, avoidance of some unpleasant situation, or simple bids for attention. On this wild episode of 13 O’Clock, Tom and Jenny will discuss several cases of faked abductions, including those of Dr. Mark Salerno, Quinn Gray, Dar Heatherington, Rahmell Pettway, and so-called “runaway bride” Jennifer Wilbanks.
