13 O’Clock Episode 263 LIVE: Women and Mental Health – A History of Hysteria

Everyone knows b*tches be crazy, right? Yeah, maybe not so much. For centuries, mental health for women was…um, a little less than ideal. From the views of ancient Greece and Rome, which saw all women’s problems as stemming from their wandering wombs, to the medieval religious views of women as more willing vessels for demonic possession and witchcraft, to the Victorian “weaker sex” narrative that saw countless women confined in asylums and later even lobotomized because of their “un-feminine” behavior, Tom and Jenny go on a whirlwind tour through the history of women’s “hysteria,” pausing to discuss a few tragic individual cases, such as those of Elizabeth Packard, Rosemary Kennedy, and Frances Farmer, as well as the story of the pioneering journalist Nellie Bly, who committed herself to an asylum in the 19th century in order to expose the conditions there. Buckle into your straight jacket and lock up your uteri, it’s about to get hysterical on a LIVE episode 263.

The mental illness variously known as Munchausen syndrome or factitious disorder is a rare but fascinating malady in which an individual either fakes illnesses for attention, deliberately gives themselves symptoms of an illness, or — in the case of Munchausen syndrome by proxy — makes someone else, usually a child, ill on purpose. On this intriguing but troubling episode 262, Tom and Jenny discuss this mysterious illness and its pathologies, as well as talk about several well-known cases of it.
