13 O’Clock Episode 453: Indian Thuggee Cults

The Thuggee were a secretive and organized group of criminals who operated in India from at least the 13th to the 19th century, notorious for their ritualistic killings and robberies. Often posing as innocent travelers, they would befriend fellow journeyers on roads and, once trust was established, strangle them with a handkerchief or noose—often in honor of the Hindu goddess Kali, whom they believed demanded human sacrifices. The British colonial authorities viewed the Thuggee as a significant threat to law and order, and during the 1830s and 1840s, they launched a major campaign to suppress the group, led by figures like William Sleeman. This crackdown led to thousands of arrests and executions, ultimately dismantling the Thuggee networks. Though their true scale and religious motivations remain debated among historians, the Thuggee have become emblematic of a dark and mysterious chapter in India’s colonial past.

13 O’Clock Episode 452: Aum Shinrikyo and the Tokyo Subway Sarin Attack

The 1995 Tokyo subway sarin attack was a deadly terrorist act carried out on March 20, 1995, by members of the Aum Shinrikyo cult in Tokyo, Japan. During the morning rush hour, five members of the cult released sarin gas, a highly toxic nerve agent, on several lines of the Tokyo subway system. The attack was meticulously planned: each member carried sarin in liquid form, wrapped in plastic bags and newspapers, and punctured them with sharpened umbrella tips before fleeing the trains. The gas spread quickly in the confined subway spaces, causing chaos and panic. The attack killed 13 people, severely injured around 50, and affected over 1,000 more with temporary vision and respiratory problems. It was the deadliest attack on Japanese soil since World War II and shocked the nation due to both its scale and the fact that it was perpetrated by a domestic religious group. Aum Shinrikyo, led by Shoko Asahara, believed in a mix of apocalyptic and religious ideologies and sought to trigger a global catastrophe. Following the attack, Japanese authorities launched a massive crackdown on the cult. Asahara and several top members were arrested, tried, and eventually sentenced to death. Asahara was executed in 2018, along with other senior cult members. The incident raised global awareness of the threat posed by chemical weapons and religious extremism and led to changes in how Japan approached public safety, emergency response, and surveillance of extremist groups.

13 O’Clock Episode 451: White Supremacist Serial Killer Joseph Paul Franklin

Joseph Paul Franklin was an American white supremacist and serial killer active during the late 1970s and early 1980s. Driven by a violent ideology rooted in racism and antisemitism, Franklin targeted Black individuals, interracial couples, and Jewish people across multiple states. He is believed to have committed at least 22 murders and numerous other violent crimes, often motivated by his extremist beliefs. Notably, he was convicted for the 1977 sniper attack on civil rights activist Vernon Jordan, who survived the shooting. Franklin also confessed to the 1978 synagogue shooting in St. Louis and an assassination attempt on Hustler magazine publisher Larry Flynt. He was ultimately sentenced to death and was executed by lethal injection in Missouri in 2013.
