On this last episode of 2019, Tom and Jenny are exploring one of the best-known and most-debated American crimes of the 19th century: the murders of Andrew and Abby Borden in Fall River, Massachusetts in 1892, a grisly hatchet slaying that may have been perpetrated by unassuming spinster Lizzie Borden. Pour a bowl of four-day-old mutton soup and cram that bloody dress in the stove, it’s time for an old-timey crime on episode 176. Happy Holidays, everyone! On this Christmas-tastic triple feature review, Tom and Jenny are discussing three holiday horrors that appeared on Shudder just in time for the holiday season. First up, the 1974 early slasher classic Black Christmas; then the recently rediscovered French killer Santa flick from 1989, Dial Code Santa Claus (a.k.a. Deadly Games); and lastly, the cheap and terrible but somehow massively entertaining Silent Night, Deadly Night Part 2, the source of the infamous “Garbage Day!” meme. Curl up with your cup of wassail and roast your chestnuts on the open fire, it’s a Christmas movie three-fer on the Retrospective show.

13 O’Clock Episode 174 – Richard “The Iceman” Kuklinski

On this mobbed-up installment, Tom and Jenny are talking about one of the most terrifying, prolific, and cold-blooded contract killers the United States has ever seen, Richard “The Iceman” Kuklinski. Allegedly working as a freelance hit man for all five of the major New York City crime families as well as a few others, Kuklinski was as professional and heartless as they come, killing people in a variety of gruesome ways, sometimes for money and sometimes just because his victim pissed him off. Ultimately convicted of six murders, he may have committed from 100-300 total, though his true victim tally is not known. Put on your cement shoes and listen to episode 174’s chilling breakdown of the man widely called “The One Man Army” and “The Devil Himself” by his criminal colleagues.

Although we once again couldn’t get to the theater this week (car issues, ugh, though they’ve been resolved now), we actually saw three new movies and a new docuseries on Netflix and Shudder, so we’re reviewing all four things! First up was the surprisingly amazing microbudget medieval monster flick The Head Hunter; then it was Netflix’s five-part examination of infamous “fake” serial killer Henry Lee Lucas, The Confession Killer; then we took in the weird, arty-farty WTF-ness of the scifi/horror Shudder exclusive Perfect; and lastly, we finally got around to watching Martin Scorsese’s latest epic gangster masterpiece The Irishman.
