13 O’Clock Episode 160 – The Strip Search Phone Call Scam, PrankNet, and Studies in Obedience

Hey, is your phone ringing? Well, don’t answer it, because Tom and Jenny are about to tell you two horrifying sagas of so-called “prank” calls gone horrifically wrong. First, we’ll be delving into the “strip search phone call scam,” where some miscreant called dozens of fast food restaurants and grocery stores in 30 US states and got employees to do terrible things, up to and including sexual assault. Then we’ll talk about the collection of assclowns known as PrankNet, who did much the same thing, with likewise outrageous (and criminal) results. We round up the show with a short discussion of psychological studies of obedience, including the famed Milgram experiments and Solomon Asch’s studies in conformity, to try to break down why callers sometimes follow disembodied instructions from a purported authority figure. Turn off your cell and prepare to say NO to the man, it’s time for episode 160.

13 O’Clock Episode 159 – Edmund Kemper: The Co-Ed Killer

Returning to true crime on this installment, Tom and Jenny are discussing the life and murders of Ed Kemper, the highly intelligent and physically enormous serial killer sometimes known as the Co-Ed Killer. After shooting his grandparents to death when he was only fifteen, Ed was institutionalized for a time, but unfortunately was released from the hospital at the age of 21, and subsequently went on to brutally murder six young women, as well as his mother and a family friend. He was also notable for his appalling mutilations of the bodies of his victims, as well as necrophilia and possibly cannibalism. Try to keep down your lunch; it’s about to get rough on episode 159.

13 O’Clock Matinee Episode 48: Eerie, I Trapped the Devil, The Hole in the Ground

Jenny’s flying solo on this installment of the Matinee (Tom got a weird 24-hour bug, plus we had to forgo theater movies for hurricane prep), but she did manage to watch three 2019 horror flicks, all of which were pretty damn good! The first is a Filipino ghost story called Eerie (available on Netflix); the second is a slow-burn psychological horror drama called I Trapped the Devil (to rent on YouTube and other VOD platforms); and the third is a stellar Irish film about changelings called The Hole in the Ground (ditto above). Sorry for the Tomlessness, but he’s made a full recovery and will be back on our regular Tuesday episode!

On this golden episode, Tom and Jenny are digging into one of the most famous tales of treasure in American history: the twisting tale of the Lost Dutchman Mine, supposedly located in the Superstition Mountains of Arizona. The area was allegedly the site of an Apache curse from well before the Spanish conquest, and once gold was discovered, all kinds of strange murders and disappearances ensued.
