13 O’Clock Episode 418: More Stories of Mad Science

Way back on Episode 35, we discussed four cases of bizarre science experiments throughout history, and on this second installment, we’ll be delving into another four even weirder tales of mad scientists. First, we’ll discuss Robert Galbraith Heath, who claimed to be able to “cure” homosexuality by stimulating the brain’s pleasure centers with electrodes. Then we’ll talk about José Delgado, who attempted to influence the behavior of animals and humans via remote control. We’ll also get into the story of so-called “Red Frankenstein” Ilya Ivanovich Ivanov, who tried to breed a human-ape hybrid. Lastly, we’ll discuss the gruesome experiments done by Vladimir Demikhov, in which he surgically created a series of two-headed dogs in order to see if the animals could survive using only one circulatory system. Put on your white lab coat and dust off your test tubes as we journey down some of the stranger avenues of scientific progress.

13 O’Clock Episode 417: No Future – A Brief, Chaotic History of Punk Rock

Punk rock emerged in the mid-1970s as a reaction against the perceived excesses of mainstream rock music. Rooted in the garage rock and proto-punk movements of the 1960s, it was characterized by fast tempos, short songs, and a raw, stripped-down sound. The genre’s DIY ethic was also a key element, with many bands self-producing their music and performing in small venues. In the U.S., bands like The Ramones in New York and The Stooges in Detroit were pioneers of the style. Meanwhile, in the UK, punk rock became a cultural movement, with bands like the Sex Pistols and The Clash leading the charge. The British punk scene was not just about music; it also had a significant impact on fashion, politics, and youth culture. By the late 1970s and early 1980s, punk rock had splintered into various subgenres, including hardcore punk in the U.S., with bands like Black Flag and Minor Threat. Although it never dominated the mainstream, punk’s influence can still be felt in music, fashion, and culture today.

13 O’Clock Episode 416: Far Right Terrorist Anders Behring Breivik

Anders Behring Breivik, a Norwegian far-right extremist, committed two devastating attacks on July 22, 2011, in Norway. First, he detonated a car bomb in Oslo’s government quarter, killing eight people and causing extensive damage. Following this, he traveled to the island of Utøya, where he carried out a mass shooting at a Labour Party youth camp, killing 69 people, many of whom were teenagers. These coordinated attacks were motivated by his extremist anti-Muslim and anti-immigrant beliefs. Breivik’s actions shocked Norway and the world, highlighting the lethal potential of radical ideologies and prompting discussions on counter-terrorism, security, and the dangers of far-right extremism.
