From a skeptical perspective, these practices lack scientific evidence and are frequently exposed as frauds involving staged testimonials, planted audience members with fake illnesses, or exploitative scams that prey on vulnerable people seeking hope. Apparent “healings” are typically attributed to the placebo effect, spontaneous remissions, misdiagnoses, or emotional catharsis rather than supernatural causes, with secular investigations repeatedly debunking miracle claims. Critics highlight the absence of rigorous, reproducible proof—such as controlled studies showing rates of healing beyond natural or psychological explanations—and warn that reliance on faith healing can delay effective medical treatment, leading to harm.

13 O’Clock Episode 477: Killer Mother Diane Downs

Elizabeth Diane Downs, born in 1955 in Arizona to a strict fundamentalist family, grew up in emotional isolation that fueled her narcissistic and histrionic tendencies, leading to an impulsive marriage at 18, multiple affairs, and three children she viewed as burdensome obstacles to her romantic obsessions. On May 19, 1983, in rural Oregon, the 27-year-old postal worker shot her children—eight-year-old Christie, seven-year-old Cheryl, and three-year-old Danny—at close range during a staged roadside ambush, killing Cheryl and leaving the others severely disabled, all to eliminate them as barriers to reconciling with her married lover, Robert “Nick” Knickerbocker. Her fabricated tale of a “bushy-haired stranger” quickly unraveled under forensic scrutiny, Christie’s hypnotic testimony, and her own failed polygraphs, culminating in a 1984 trial where she was convicted of murder and attempted murder, sentenced to life plus 50 years. Downs’ chilling lack of remorse persisted through a 1987 prison escape, multiple denied paroles, and psychological evaluations diagnosing her as a malignant hysteric psychopath; her case, immortalized in Ann Rule’s Small Sacrifices and a 1989 TV movie, exposed the horrors of maternal filicide while profoundly scarring survivors Christie and Danny (adopted by prosecutor Fred Hugi) and her fourth child, Rebecca. As of October 2025, at age 70 in a California prison, Downs’ latest appeal—challenging nonunanimous jury verdicts—grinds on amid public outrage, underscoring her unyielding denial and the enduring legacy of a mother’s monstrous betrayal.

13 O’Clock Episode 476: The Murder of John Lennon and Various Beatles Conspiracies

John Lennon, the iconic co-founder of the Beatles and a prominent peace activist, was tragically murdered on December 8, 1980, outside his residence at the Dakota building in New York City. He was shot four times in the back by Mark David Chapman, a disturbed fan obsessed with Lennon’s fame and the novel The Catcher in the Rye, who had traveled from Hawaii to carry out the act after obtaining Lennon’s autograph earlier that day. Despite immediate medical efforts at Roosevelt Hospital, Lennon succumbed to massive blood loss and was pronounced dead at age 40, leaving behind a profound legacy in music and activism.

Among the numerous conspiracy theories surrounding the Beatles, one of the most enduring is the “Paul is dead” rumor, which claims that Paul McCartney perished in a car accident on November 9, 1966, and was secretly replaced by a look-alike to keep the band intact, with alleged clues hidden in album artwork, lyrics, and backward messages on tracks like those from Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band. Other theories include suggestions of CIA involvement in suppressing the band’s radical anti-war messages or connections to the organization through extended associates, as well as occult pacts or Illuminati influences that purportedly fueled their rapid rise to fame and cultural impact.

Tom and Jenny discuss the strange 1973 Spanish/French film, also known under the titles Clockwork Terror, A Drop of Blood to Die Loving, To Love, Perhaps to Die, and several others, in which a nurse in a weird dystopian near-future seduces young men and murders them. The movie is heavily influenced by Stanley Kubrick’s A Clockwork Orange.
