13 O’Clock Episode 379: Analog Horror, The Backrooms, and Liminal Spaces

Over the past decade or more, one of the most prevalent trends in creepy internet storytelling involves so-called analog horror, a subgenre similar to found footage that utilizes old analog media, particularly VHS and retro television broadcasts, to tell its stories. Sometimes featured in the analog subgenre is the concept of liminal space, generally described as a sort of in-between place that’s abandoned and unsettling. The idea of eerie liminal spaces went viral in about 2019, with the onset of the collaborative online creepypasta known as The Backrooms. On this disquieting episode, Tom and Jenny discuss the history of analog horror and liminal spaces and talk about why these types of stories are so effectively spooky for such a large number of people.

Between February of 1976 and March of 1977, at least four children (and possibly more) were abducted, held captive for a time, and then murdered in Oakland County, Michigan by a person or persons unknown. In the decades since the crimes occurred, several disturbing theories about the case have sprung up, including the notion that the killer had a sadomasochistic slave who wrote to the police to tell them about the crimes, the possibility that the children were sacrificed in occult rituals on particular dates of significance on the pagan calendar, and the hypothesis that their deaths were tied to a pedophile ring on North Fox Island in Lake Michigan.
