The 1975 murder of 15-year-old Martha Moxley in the affluent gated community of Belle Haven, Greenwich, Connecticut, remains one of the most notorious unsolved cases in American true crime history; on October 30, Moxley was bludgeoned to death with a golf club near her family’s home, sparking a decades-long investigation that led to the 2002 conviction of Kennedy cousin Michael Skakel—later vacated in 2018 and dismissed without retrial in 2023 due to evidentiary issues. Similarly, the 2005 murder of 25-year-old photographer Teresa Halbach in Manitowoc County, Wisconsin, ignited national controversy when she vanished on October 31 while on a photo assignment; her remains were later found on the property of convicted felon Steven Avery, who—along with his nephew Brendan Dassey—was found guilty in a trial marred by allegations of prosecutorial misconduct and coerced confessions, as dramatized in the Netflix series Making a Murderer, though both men remain imprisoned amid ongoing appeals.
