13 O’Clock Episode 309 LIVE: The British Premonitions Bureau

In October of 1966, in the small mining village of Aberfan, Wales, a colliery spoil tip suddenly slid downhill as slurry, burying a local school and several houses, killing 116 children and 28 adults. In the wake of the horrific disaster, a psychiatrist named John Barker, who arrived at the scene to offer his help along with thousands of others, learned that at least a couple of children and some adults had allegedly dreamed or drawn pictures about the tragedy shortly before it happened. Intrigued, Barker wondered if there was some way to solicit supposed premonitions of impending disaster from the public, codify them, and use them as a sort of early warning system. He and a few others established The British Premonitions Bureau not long after the Aberfan incident, and though it was only in existence for two years, it did boast a handful of possible successes, as well as hundreds of failures. Look into the future with Tom and Jenny on this portentous omen of an episode.

13 O’Clock Episode 306 LIVE: Spiritualism and Séances

Starting in the mid-nineteenth century, a new belief system that would come to be known as Spiritualism would sweep across the English-speaking world. Jump-started by the infamous Fox sisters and their supposed contact with spirits, the movement posited that certain people known as mediums had the ability to communicate with loved ones who had passed away. Many of these contacts were supposedly made at spooky séances, at which folks would sit in the dark, join hands, and have all sorts of supposedly paranormal shenanigans occur, such as tables tilting to and fro, glowing musical instruments appearing out of thin air, disembodied voices, and sometimes mediums emitting a luminous fluid called ectoplasm from their noses and mouths (eww). On this eerie and spiritual installment, join Tom and Jenny as they delve into the mysterious history of the Spiritualist movement and the tricks and tropes of the séance, including the method in which some fraudulent mediums accomplished their purportedly supernatural feats. It’s ghostly and ghastly all up in the parlor on this fun and phantasmic episode 306.

It’s a paranormal extravaganza on this spooky installment of 13 O’Clock! First up, we’ll be discussing the mysterious Houska Castle, a 13th-century Gothic structure in the Czech Republic which was supposedly built over an actual gateway to Hell. Then we’ll return to the fascinating case of Doris Bither, who was the real woman behind the character of Carla Moran in the 1982 horror film The Entity. In 1974, Doris approached parapsychologist Dr. Barry Taff, claiming that her house was haunted, and further, that she’s been repeatedly sexually assaulted by the spirits dwelling in her Culver City, California home. Over the course of the investigation, a number of eerie photographs were taken that seem to suggest the presence of some inexplicable phenomena. Join Tom and Jenny as we travel down the bottomless pit and see what spirits we can unearth on a ghastly and ghoulish episode 302.

Time travel has long been a staple of the science fiction genre, and there are some who believe that we may one day be able to achieve it in reality. But what about people who claim to have already traveled through time? On tonight’s epochal episode, Tom and Jenny have a freewheeling and freedrinking discussion about a handful of such individuals, including the famous “John Titor,” who asserted that he had traveled back from 2036 to obtain an IBM 5100 computer from 1975. We’ll also look into the viral “time traveling hipster” photo, as well as a few other ostensible chrononauts like “Rudolph Fentz” and the guy who supposedly used time travel to make a killing on the stock market in 2003. Settle into the spacetime continuum for a temporally challenging episode 274.
