In October of 1966, in the small mining village of Aberfan, Wales, a colliery spoil tip suddenly slid downhill as slurry, burying a local school and several houses, killing 116 children and 28 adults. In the wake of the horrific disaster, a psychiatrist named John Barker, who arrived at the scene to offer his help along with thousands of others, learned that at least a couple of children and some adults had allegedly dreamed or drawn pictures about the tragedy shortly before it happened. Intrigued, Barker wondered if there was some way to solicit supposed premonitions of impending disaster from the public, codify them, and use them as a sort of early warning system. He and a few others established The British Premonitions Bureau not long after the Aberfan incident, and though it was only in existence for two years, it did boast a handful of possible successes, as well as hundreds of failures.
