Dave Pelzer is an American author and motivational speaker best known for his 1995 memoir A Child Called “It,” which chronicles the severe childhood abuse he says he endured before being rescued by child welfare authorities at the age of twelve. The memoir became an international bestseller, bringing widespread attention to the realities of child abuse and the long-term effects of trauma. Following his rescue, Pelzer spent time in foster care, served in the U.S. Air Force, and later built a career as an author and public speaker focused on resilience, perseverance, and personal growth. While A Child Called “It” has inspired millions of readers and has been widely used by educators and child welfare professionals, it has also been the subject of controversy, with some family members disputing aspects of Pelzer’s account. Despite these debates, the book remains one of the most influential memoirs on childhood trauma, encouraging greater awareness of child abuse, the importance of early intervention, and the possibility of recovery after profound adversity.
