13 O’Clock Episode 506: Gwen Shamblin Lara: Diet Guru and Christian Cult Leader

Gwen Shamblin Lara was a prominent American diet guru and religious leader who founded the Weigh Down Workshop in the 1980s, a wildly popular faith-based weight-loss program that taught participants to rely on God rather than calorie counting to overcome overeating, reaching hundreds of thousands worldwide through books, videos, and church classes. In 1999 she established the Remnant Fellowship Church in Tennessee, shifting toward a high-demand, non-Trinitarian Christian movement that emphasized radical obedience, biblical literalism, and visible spiritual fruit—including thinness as a sign of holiness. The group faced intense accusations of being a cult, including authoritarian control, isolation from outsiders, financial exploitation, extreme child discipline practices (such as corporal punishment with glue sticks), and shunning of dissenters, highlighted by the 2003 death of 8-year-old Josef Smith, whose Remnant-member parents were convicted of abuse-related charges. Ex-members described psychological manipulation, eating disorders, and family fractures, while the church and defenders rejected the cult label, calling it persecution of a devoted biblical community. Shamblin’s lavish lifestyle, controversial 2018 remarriage, and death in a 2021 plane crash with church leaders further fueled scrutiny, as seen in the HBO docuseries The Way Down. Her legacy remains polarizing: empowering transformation for some, yet a cautionary tale of charismatic authority and high-control religion for others.

13 O’Clock Episode 70 – Holiday Special: Biblical Allegory in the Books of Daniel and Revelation

Happy Holidays, 13 O’Clock listeners! On our sorta Christmasy-themed episode, we’ll be delving into the fascinating world of Biblical mythology, and specifically how the books of Daniel and Revelation may have allegorical, astronomical and astrological underpinnings. Were these books really prophecies of events yet to come, or were they simply fancy mythological retellings of historical happenstances? Put on your ugly Christmas sweater, pour yourself some eggnog, and kick back with your hosts as they jingle all the way into episode 70. Enjoy, and have a safe and happy holiday season out there!
