Over more than three decades, The Simpsons has earned a reputation for “predicting” real-world events—not through prophecy, but through razor-sharp satire, cultural literacy, and sheer volume. From explicitly naming Donald Trump as a future U.S. president years before it happened, to visual gags foreshadowing Disney’s eventual purchase of Fox, to eerily specific moments like Cypress Hill later performing with the London Symphony Orchestra or the U.S. beating Sweden in Olympic curling, the show has repeatedly landed close to reality. Many of its most accurate predictions stem from writers extrapolating obvious trends in politics, technology, and pop culture—such as video calling, smartwatches, voting machine controversies, and legalized cannabis—yet the specificity of certain jokes makes them feel uncanny in hindsight. While not mystical foresight, The Simpsons stands as a case study in how informed satire can sometimes look exactly like prophecy once the future catches up.

13 O’Clock Episode 476: The Murder of John Lennon and Various Beatles Conspiracies

John Lennon, the iconic co-founder of the Beatles and a prominent peace activist, was tragically murdered on December 8, 1980, outside his residence at the Dakota building in New York City. He was shot four times in the back by Mark David Chapman, a disturbed fan obsessed with Lennon’s fame and the novel The Catcher in the Rye, who had traveled from Hawaii to carry out the act after obtaining Lennon’s autograph earlier that day. Despite immediate medical efforts at Roosevelt Hospital, Lennon succumbed to massive blood loss and was pronounced dead at age 40, leaving behind a profound legacy in music and activism.

Among the numerous conspiracy theories surrounding the Beatles, one of the most enduring is the “Paul is dead” rumor, which claims that Paul McCartney perished in a car accident on November 9, 1966, and was secretly replaced by a look-alike to keep the band intact, with alleged clues hidden in album artwork, lyrics, and backward messages on tracks like those from Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band. Other theories include suggestions of CIA involvement in suppressing the band’s radical anti-war messages or connections to the organization through extended associates, as well as occult pacts or Illuminati influences that purportedly fueled their rapid rise to fame and cultural impact.

Marilyn Monroe, born Norma Jeane Mortenson on June 1, 1926, was an iconic American actress, model, and singer, celebrated for her roles in films like Gentlemen Prefer Blondes (1953), The Seven Year Itch (1955), and Some Like It Hot (1959). Known for her glamorous persona, comedic talent, and breathy voice, she became a cultural symbol of beauty and femininity in the 1950s.

Despite her success, Monroe struggled with personal issues, including turbulent relationships, mental health challenges, and substance abuse. She married three times—James Dougherty, Joe DiMaggio, and Arthur Miller—and had high-profile relationships, notably with President John F. Kennedy and possibly Robert Kennedy.

Monroe died on August 5, 1962, at age 36 in her Los Angeles home. The official coroner’s report ruled her death a probable suicide from a barbiturate overdose, citing her history of depression and prior overdose attempts. However, her death sparked numerous conspiracy theories due to inconsistencies and her connections to powerful figures.

Some speculate Monroe was killed to silence her about alleged affairs with JFK and/or RFK, fearing she might reveal sensitive political or personal secrets. Claims of RFK’s presence in Los Angeles that day and missing phone records fuel this theory, though no definitive evidence supports it.

Theories suggest organized crime, possibly linked to her Kennedy connections or Hollywood circles, orchestrated her death. This is largely based on her rumored associations with figures like Sam Giancana, but evidence is circumstantial. Some believe the CIA or FBI eliminated Monroe due to her knowledge of classified information via the Kennedys, with her home allegedly bugged. Declassified files show FBI interest in her, but no proof of foul play exists.

Less sensational theories propose her death resulted from a miscalculated dose by her doctors or a mix-up in medications, given her reliance on prescriptions and inconsistent medical oversight. Investigations, including a 1982 review, upheld the suicide ruling, citing high levels of barbiturates (Nembutal and chloral hydrate) in her system and no physical evidence of murder. Still, gaps like the missing autopsy details, delayed reporting, and cleaned-up scene keep conspiracies alive. Monroe’s death remains a cultural mystery, blending her tragic life with speculation about hidden truths.

Skull and Bones is one of the most well-known and secretive collegiate societies in the United States, founded in 1832 at Yale University by students including William Huntington Russell and Alphonso Taft (father of President William Howard Taft). Often referred to as “The Order” or “The Brotherhood of Death,” the society selects about 15 Yale seniors each year, typically those who show strong leadership, influence, or prominence on campus. The society is famous for its strict secrecy, mysterious initiation rituals, and exclusive meetings held in a windowless, mausoleum-like building on Yale’s campus known as “The Tomb.” Members, known as “Bonesmen,” maintain lifelong ties and often go on to hold powerful positions in politics, business, and law. Notable alumni include Presidents William Howard Taft, George H. W. Bush, and George W. Bush, as well as former Secretary of State John Kerry. Because of its secrecy and elite membership, Skull and Bones has been the subject of numerous conspiracy theories, with claims of global political influence and connections to the CIA. The society has also been a recurring theme in pop culture, portrayed in books and films such as The Skulls and often cited in discussions of elite American institutions.

There are numerous conspiracy theories surrounding Elvis Presley, with some fans believing he never actually died. One of the most popular theories suggests that he faked his death in 1977 to escape fame, possibly entering witness protection after working with the FBI. Others claim he was spotted as an extra in Home Alone (1990) or living under the alias “Jon Burrows.” Some theories go even further, suggesting he was a government agent, a time traveler, or even had alien connections. Another bizarre claim is that Elvis became a preacher named Bob Joyce in Arkansas. Despite the lack of evidence, these theories persist, reflecting the King’s enduring cultural influence.

The Roswell Incident refers to an event in July 1947, when something crashed on a ranch near Roswell, New Mexico. The U.S. military initially claimed it was a “flying disc” but quickly retracted the statement, saying it was a weather balloon. This sparked widespread speculation that the government was covering up evidence of an alien spacecraft. Over the years, conspiracy theories grew, fueled by declassified documents and witness accounts. In 1994, the U.S. government admitted the debris was part of Project Mogul, a top-secret program using high-altitude balloons to detect Soviet nuclear tests. Despite this explanation, Roswell remains a focal point for UFO enthusiasts and alien conspiracy theories.

Ted Gunderson was a former FBI agent who became a prominent conspiracy theorist after retiring from the bureau. 13 O’Clock Episode 386: NASA’s Zone F and the Megalodon

Back in 2021, a viral video on TikTok appeared to show a massive shark swimming alongside a ship off the coast of Massachusetts, fueling rumors that the gigantic fish might be a surviving megalodon. Then, in 2023, another TikTok video introduced a story about a diver who had allegedly discovered a huge cage beneath the waters off Maryland. Upon submerging to have a look, he not only noticed writing on the cage claiming it belonged to NASA’s “Zone F,” but also purportedly saw a 70-foot shark swimming around in there. On this oceanic episode, Jenny looks into the conspiracy theories surrounding the hypothesized Zone F and the possible existence of megalodons in the present day.

13 O’Clock Episode 369: Princess Diana Conspiracy Theories

In late August of 1997, the world was shocked by the sudden, horrific death of Diana, Princess of Wales in a violent car crash, which also killed her partner, Dodi Fayed, and the driver of the vehicle, Henri Paul; Diana’s bodyguard, Trevor Rees-Jones, was seriously injured, but survived. Seemingly only hours after the crash, theories began to swirl that the event was no accident, and to this day, many people believe that the woman dubbed “The People’s Princess” was deliberately killed by members of the royal family so Charles could remarry, or that her death was part of some CIA or MI6 plot, or any number of other hypotheses. On this episode, Tom and Jenny will travel down the royal rabbit hole and break down some of the wild theories behind Diana’s death.
