In November 2022, four University of Idaho students—Kaylee Goncalves, Madison Mogen, Xana Kernodle, and Ethan Chapin—were tragically killed in a brutal stabbing attack at an off-campus residence in Moscow, Idaho. The incident occurred in the early morning hours of November 13, sparking widespread fear and grief in the small college town. The victims were found in their shared home near the university campus, and the case quickly drew national attention due to the violent nature of the crime and the initial lack of leads. The investigation spanned weeks, involving local, state, and federal authorities. In late December 2022, Bryan Kohberger, a 28-year-old Ph.D. criminology student at Washington State University, was arrested and charged with the murders. Authorities linked him to the crime through DNA evidence, cell phone records, and surveillance footage. The case remains ongoing as Kohberger awaits trial.

13 O’Clock Episode 438: The Pulse Nightclub Shooting

The Pulse nightclub shooting was a tragic mass shooting that occurred on June 12, 2016, in Orlando, Florida. A gunman, armed with an assault rifle and a handgun, opened fire at Pulse, a popular LGBTQ+ nightclub, killing 49 people and injuring 53 others in what became one of the deadliest mass shootings in U.S. history at the time. The attack, later identified as an act of domestic terrorism and a hate crime, targeted a community gathering space that symbolized inclusivity and safety. The shooter, Omar Mateen, was killed in a standoff with police after a three-hour ordeal. The tragedy not only devastated the victims’ families and the LGBTQ+ community but also sparked national debates on gun control, LGBTQ+ rights, and terrorism. In its aftermath, vigils and memorials were held worldwide to honor the victims and advocate for stronger efforts to combat hate and violence.

The Menendez brothers, Lyle and Erik, became infamous for the brutal 1989 murders of their wealthy parents, José and Kitty Menendez, in their Beverly Hills home. Initially, the brothers claimed innocence, but their extravagant spending in the aftermath of the murders raised suspicions. They later admitted to the killings, citing years of alleged emotional, physical, and sexual abuse by their father as the motive. Their 1993 trial captivated the nation, with its mix of family drama and sensational testimony. Ultimately, both were convicted of first-degree murder and sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole, a sentence they continue to serve while maintaining their claims of abuse. The case remains a subject of public fascination, inspiring numerous books, documentaries, and debates about justice and family trauma.

13 O’Clock Episode 414: Robert Ben Rhoades – The Truck Stop Killer

Robert Ben Rhoades, known as the Truck Stop Killer, is an American serial killer and rapist who terrorized the highways of the United States during the late 1980s and early 1990s. A long-haul truck driver, Rhoades used his job to traverse the country, abducting, torturing, and murdering victims in his mobile torture chamber—a specially modified sleeper cab in his truck. His crimes came to light in 1990 when a police officer discovered a handcuffed woman in his truck during a routine traffic stop. Rhoades was subsequently arrested and linked to multiple murders. He was convicted and sentenced to life imprisonment without the possibility of parole. His exact number of victims remains unknown, but investigators believe he could be responsible for as many as fifty deaths.

13 O’Clock Episode 413: Ronald DeFeo Jr. – The Real Amityville Horror

Ronald DeFeo Jr. was the perpetrator of a notorious mass murder that took place on November 13, 1974, in Amityville, New York. DeFeo, 23 years old at the time, murdered his entire family: his parents, Ronald DeFeo Sr. and Louise DeFeo, and his four siblings, Dawn, Allison, Marc, and John Matthew, as they slept in their home. The victims were shot with a .35 caliber Marlin rifle. DeFeo initially claimed that the killings were carried out by a mob hitman, but his story quickly unraveled. He later confessed to the murders, stating that he had heard voices urging him to kill his family. The case gained widespread attention and eventually inspired the book and subsequent film adaptations of The Amityville Horror, which portrayed the family’s house as haunted. In his trial, DeFeo’s defense attempted to plead insanity, claiming that he heard voices that compelled him to commit the murders. However, he was found guilty of six counts of second-degree murder and was sentenced to six concurrent sentences of 25 years to life in prison. Ronald DeFeo Jr. died in custody on March 12, 2021.

Lucy Letby, a neonatal nurse in the United Kingdom, gained national notoriety as a convicted murderer responsible for the deaths of multiple infants under her care. Employed at the Countess of Chester Hospital, Letby was initially trusted to care for the most vulnerable patients—premature and sick newborns. However, suspicions arose as an unusual number of infant deaths and unexplained health deteriorations occurred during her shifts. Following a meticulous investigation, Letby was found guilty of deliberately harming these infants through various means, including the administration of lethal doses of insulin and injecting air into their bloodstream. Her actions shocked the medical community and the public, leading to widespread discussions about hospital safety, oversight, and the psychological profiling of medical professionals.

Shad Thyrion, a 24-year-old resident of Green Bay, Wisconsin, was brutally murdered on February 23, 2022. The gruesome nature of the crime sent shockwaves through the community and garnered national attention. Shad’s dismembered body was discovered in the basement of his parents’ home, leading to a swift investigation by local authorities. Taylor Schabusiness, a 25-year-old woman, was arrested and charged with the murder after evidence, including bloody clothing and body parts, was found linking her to the crime. Schabusiness almost immediately admitted to the killing, revealing disturbing details about the events leading to Thyrion’s death. The case highlighted issues of mental health and substance abuse, as Schabusiness had a history of both. Shad Thyrion’s tragic death left his family and friends devastated, and the community mourned the loss of a young life taken in such a violent manner. 13 O’Clock Episode 398: Randall Woodfield, The I-5 Killer

Between October of 1980 and February of 1981, a perpetrator known as the I-5 Bandit or the I-5 Killer terrorized Oregon, Washington, and California, raping and murdering women and girls in a frenzied spree of violence. The culprit was apprehended in March of 1981 and turned out to be a man by the name of Randall Woodfield, a former football player from an upper-middle-class family who was drafted by the Green Bay Packers in 1974 (but never played for them professionally). Though Woodfield was ultimately convicted of only one murder, he is suspected to have committed between 25 and 44, and he is currently serving a life sentence plus 165 years. Between 1987 and 1991 in the American Midwest, an unknown individual was prowling Interstate 65 in Indiana and Kentucky, raping and murdering at least three women in roadside motels. The perpetrator, variously known as The Days Inn Killer or the I-65 Killer, remained at large for years, and it wasn’t even until 2008 that authorities linked the crimes and realized they were dealing with a serial killer. Sadly, by the time he was identified via DNA as Kentucky railroad worker Harry Edward Greenwell, the monster was already dead, having succumbed to cancer in 2013 while living a normal, quiet life in Iowa.
