13 O’Clock Episode 453: Indian Thuggee Cults

The Thuggee were a secretive and organized group of criminals who operated in India from at least the 13th to the 19th century, notorious for their ritualistic killings and robberies. Often posing as innocent travelers, they would befriend fellow journeyers on roads and, once trust was established, strangle them with a handkerchief or noose—often in honor of the Hindu goddess Kali, whom they believed demanded human sacrifices. The British colonial authorities viewed the Thuggee as a significant threat to law and order, and during the 1830s and 1840s, they launched a major campaign to suppress the group, led by figures like William Sleeman. This crackdown led to thousands of arrests and executions, ultimately dismantling the Thuggee networks. Though their true scale and religious motivations remain debated among historians, the Thuggee have become emblematic of a dark and mysterious chapter in India’s colonial past.

13 O’Clock Episode 452: Aum Shinrikyo and the Tokyo Subway Sarin Attack

The 1995 Tokyo subway sarin attack was a deadly terrorist act carried out on March 20, 1995, by members of the Aum Shinrikyo cult in Tokyo, Japan. During the morning rush hour, five members of the cult released sarin gas, a highly toxic nerve agent, on several lines of the Tokyo subway system. The attack was meticulously planned: each member carried sarin in liquid form, wrapped in plastic bags and newspapers, and punctured them with sharpened umbrella tips before fleeing the trains. The gas spread quickly in the confined subway spaces, causing chaos and panic. The attack killed 13 people, severely injured around 50, and affected over 1,000 more with temporary vision and respiratory problems. It was the deadliest attack on Japanese soil since World War II and shocked the nation due to both its scale and the fact that it was perpetrated by a domestic religious group. Aum Shinrikyo, led by Shoko Asahara, believed in a mix of apocalyptic and religious ideologies and sought to trigger a global catastrophe. Following the attack, Japanese authorities launched a massive crackdown on the cult. Asahara and several top members were arrested, tried, and eventually sentenced to death. Asahara was executed in 2018, along with other senior cult members. The incident raised global awareness of the threat posed by chemical weapons and religious extremism and led to changes in how Japan approached public safety, emergency response, and surveillance of extremist groups.

13 O’Clock Episode 390: Adolfo Constanzo and the Narco-Satanists

Serial killer and cult leader Adolfo Constanzo, between 1986 and 1989, led the drug-trafficking and occult sacrifice gang that came to be known as either the Matamoros Cult or the Narco-Satanists. Along with his companion and self-professed witch Sara Aldrete, the cult was responsible for the torture and murder of at least fifteen people, and possibly dozens more. Their most infamous crime was the horrifying torture and murder of American pre-med student Mark Kilroy, who was abducted while in Mexico for spring break. 13 O’Clock Episode 384: Twin Flames Universe

There are a lot of weird cults out there, but one of the strangest ones to emerge in recent years is the so-called Twin Flames Universe, founded in the 2000s by a couple called Jeff and Shaleia Divine. Their belief system revolves around the idea of everyone having a “twin flame,” something like a way more complicated version of a soulmate, who is supposedly divinely assigned for the pair to help each other on their respective spiritual journeys. The cult’s bizarre mix of Christianity and New Age beliefs has drawn criticism, especially after a few of their members were found to be stalking their purported “twin flames” and some former members claim they were coerced into cutting off contact with their families and changing their gender expression. The group has been the subject of two recent documentaries: Desperately Seeking Soulmate: Escaping Twin Flames Universe (on Amazon Prime) and Escaping Twin Flames (on Netflix), and Tom and Jenny are gonna talk about them on this wild and woo-woo episode of 13 O’Clock.

Back in the early 1960s, the scamming Hernández brothers rolled into the poor, isolated village of Yerba Buena, Mexico, and claimed they were prophets of the gods, telling fanciful tales of untold riches for the villagers if only they did whatever the two brothers said. This worked for a while, but when the townsfolk began to notice that they weren’t actually receiving any of the wealth the “prophets” promised, the Hernándezes realized they’d have to up their game. Recruiting a nearby, eighteen-year-old sex worker named Magdalena Solís and using simple magic tricks to pass her off as an ancient and all-powerful Aztec goddess named Cōātlīcue, the scam jumped into high gear once again. That is, until Magdalena started to get her own ideas about who was running the show, leading to one of the most horrific cult murder sprees we’ve ever discussed on 13 O’Clock, one that is truly right out of a horror movie. Join Tom and Jenny as they delve into the bizarre Mexican sex cult that eventually demanded human sacrifice, and discuss the woman at the center of it all, the serial killer sometimes known as The High Priestess of Blood.

The Unification Church, probably better known as The Moonies after the founder of the cult, Sun Myung Moon, began in Korea in the 1950s, and now claims to have about 3 million adherents. Based on Moon’s book, Divine Principle, Moonies apparently believe in the establishment of a “God-centered family,” and posit that Moon was a Messiah. They came to prominence in the United States in the 1970s, particularly in regards to their mass weddings which received a lot of media attention, but since then, the cult has become a very large, and some would say dangerous, cultural and political influence in Korea and around the world. Join Tom and Jenny as they travel down another cult rabbit hole on this brainwashed installment of 13 O’Clock.

Then we’ll discuss the Chundawat family of Burari, India, who all hanged themselves in 2018 and were the subject of a recent Netflix documentary. Who knew that cornflakes could be so fascinating?!? The name Kellogg is today remembered primarily in regards to breakfast cereals, but what some people may not know is that there’s a whole intriguing story behind Dr. John Kellogg, inventor of the cornflake among many other things, and the health spa he headed in Battle Creek, Michigan back in the 19th century. Kellogg, a Seventh-Day Adventist, was an early proponent of vegetarianism, light therapy, and physical exercise (among other, stranger things, like sexual abstinence and yogurt enemas) as a way to wellness. He was also remarkably prescient in his early development of nut butters, meat subsitutes, soy milk, granola, and other health foods that modern people take for granted. Unfortunately, he was also REALLY into eugenics, so can’t win ’em all. Back in 1975, a French dude named Claude Vorilhon claimed he was approached by an alien named Yahweh who told him that the human race had been genetically engineered by advanced extraterrestrials called Elohim, who redubbed Claude as Raël and bade him to prepare humanity for the aliens’ seemingly benevolent arrival. Decades later, the belief system known as the Raëlians boasts between 20,000 and 40,000 followers worldwide, who all share beliefs in free love, the positive influence of technology (including human cloning), and a system of government run by geniuses.
