13 O’Clock Episode 345: Magdalena Solís, The High Priestess of Blood

Back in the early 1960s, the scamming Hernández brothers rolled into the poor, isolated village of Yerba Buena, Mexico, and claimed they were prophets of the gods, telling fanciful tales of untold riches for the villagers if only they did whatever the two brothers said. This worked for a while, but when the townsfolk began to notice that they weren’t actually receiving any of the wealth the “prophets” promised, the Hernándezes realized they’d have to up their game. Recruiting a nearby, eighteen-year-old sex worker named Magdalena Solís and using simple magic tricks to pass her off as an ancient and all-powerful Aztec goddess named Cōātlīcue, the scam jumped into high gear once again. That is, until Magdalena started to get her own ideas about who was running the show, leading to one of the most horrific cult murder sprees we’ve ever discussed on 13 O’Clock, one that is truly right out of a horror movie. Join Tom and Jenny as they delve into the bizarre Mexican sex cult that eventually demanded human sacrifice, and discuss the woman at the center of it all, the serial killer sometimes known as The High Priestess of Blood.

The Unification Church, probably better known as The Moonies after the founder of the cult, Sun Myung Moon, began in Korea in the 1950s, and now claims to have about 3 million adherents. Based on Moon’s book, Divine Principle, Moonies apparently believe in the establishment of a “God-centered family,” and posit that Moon was a Messiah. They came to prominence in the United States in the 1970s, particularly in regards to their mass weddings which received a lot of media attention, but since then, the cult has become a very large, and some would say dangerous, cultural and political influence in Korea and around the world. Join Tom and Jenny as they travel down another cult rabbit hole on this brainwashed installment of 13 O’Clock.

First we’ll talk about the so-called Adam House in Bangladesh, which housed a family who went out in 2007 and jumped in front of a train. Then we’ll discuss the Chundawat family of Burari, India, who all hanged themselves in 2018 and were the subject of a recent Netflix documentary. Who knew that cornflakes could be so fascinating?!? The name Kellogg is today remembered primarily in regards to breakfast cereals, but what some people may not know is that there’s a whole intriguing story behind Dr. John Kellogg, inventor of the cornflake among many other things, and the health spa he headed in Battle Creek, Michigan back in the 19th century. Kellogg, a Seventh-Day Adventist, was an early proponent of vegetarianism, light therapy, and physical exercise (among other, stranger things, like sexual abstinence and yogurt enemas) as a way to wellness. He was also remarkably prescient in his early development of nut butters, meat subsitutes, soy milk, granola, and other health foods that modern people take for granted. Unfortunately, he was also REALLY into eugenics, so can’t win ’em all. Join Tom and Jenny as they travel the Road to Wellville on this healthy history of Dr. Kellogg and his Battle Creek Sanitarium on a delicious and nutritious episode 287.

13 O’Clock Episode 249 LIVE: The Cult of Santa Muerte / The Life and Mysterious Death of Edgar Allan Poe

On this week’s installment, due to a tie in the Patreon topic poll, we’ll be tackling two unrelated but also sort of thematically similar subjects. First, we’ll be talking about the intriguing and increasingly widespread cult of Santa Muerte, a sort of Catholic-based folk religion largely centered in Mexico, but with adherents all over the globe. Santa Muerte, or Saint Death, is a skeletal female saint with millions of devotees who offer her prayers and gifts in exchange for favors, and though her number of worshippers is on the rise, Catholic orthodoxy has condemned the veneration of her as akin to Satanism. Then, on the second half of the show, we’ll finally get around to discussing one of Jenny’s heroes, the massively influential but troubled author Edgar Allan Poe. His short life was plagued with poverty and tragedy, but he managed to become one of the most iconic horror and mystery writers of all time, though his mysterious death occurred before he could really appreciate how immortal his work had become. It’s a death-obsessed graveyard full of gothic goodness, so dig out your absinthe and your best black duds as we go deep into the sepulchral darkness on episode 249.

13 O’Clock Episode 247 LIVE: The Disappearance of Amelia Earhart / The Ant Hill Kids Cult

On tonight’s two-topic extravaganza, Tom and Jenny discuss two disparate but equally fascinating cases. First, we’ll discuss the disappearance of famed female aviatrix Amelia Earhart, who along with her navigator Fred Noonan, vanished somewhere in the Pacific Ocean during the final leg of her historic around-the-world flight in 1937. Then, on the second half, gird your loins and keep the liquor handy, because we’ll be talking about one of the most f*cked up cults we’ve ever heard of (and that’s saying something). Known as the Ant Hill Kids, the group was formed in 1977 by French Canadian psychopath Roch Theriault as an offshoot of the Seventh-Day Adventists, but soon descended into an unbelievable nightmare of torture, mutilation, abuse, and murder. Seriously, this story’s rough, even for us. So gather your beverage and snacks of choice, and relax for a kinda schizophrenic episode 247.

13 O’Clock Episode 244 LIVE: The Manson Family

On this grimly groovy installment, Tom and Jenny travel back to the heady, hippie-filled days of 1969, when a psychopathic ex-con by the name of Charles Manson orchestrated the savage murders of several innocent people, including up and coming actress Sharon Tate. Manson’s brainwashed followers, known as the Family, had perhaps come to believe in their leader’s bizarre predictions about Helter Skelter, a coming race war that would ostensibly result in Manson and his followers running the world. Or maybe there were even more complicated motives involving money, drug dealing, and petty revenge. Put on your love beads and tune in, turn on, drop out as we talk about the infamous Manson Family and the Tate-LaBianca murders on a LIVE episode 244.

Far out, maaaaaan. On today’s groovy discussion, Tom and Jenny are traveling back to the heady days of the late 60s and early 70s to talk about a lesser known hippie cult known as the Source Family. Led by a larger-than-life guru figure called Father Yod, the cult began in the burgeoning health food scene of Southern California and eventually went into full-on communal living and underage marriages territory. While far less horrific than some other cults of the period, such as Jim Jones’s People’s Temple or the Manson Family, the Source Family is still a fascinating and crazy tale of sex, drugs, terrible jam bands, and hang gliding, so tune in, turn on, and drop out into a LIVE episode 236.
