13 O’Clock Episode 383: The Khamar-Daban Incident – Weirder Than Dyatlov Pass?

Most people are familiar with the Dyatlov Pass Incident, in which nine experienced Soviet hikers died under morbidly mysterious circumstances. But less familiar to the world at large is the equally horrifying Khamar-Daban Incident, which occurred in August of 1993. In that case, a group of seven climbers was hiking through a mountain range in southern Siberia when they were not only confronted with terrible weather, but also some bizarre event that made members of the group suddenly begin screaming, bleeding from the eyes, and foaming from the mouth. Six of the hikers died almost simultaneously, while the seventh, a terrified seventeen-year-old named Valentina Utochenko, managed to make her way down the mountain and find rescue. She was so traumatized by what she saw that she barely spoke of it for ages, and even today, there are all sorts of theories about what befell the group on that rain-soaked mountain pass, ranging from nerve gas to poisonous mushrooms to Yeti attack. Join Tom and Jenny as they scale the north face of this enigmatic and tragic mystery on a sad and scary Episode 383.

In 1959, in a remote area of the Ural Mountains in Soviet Russia, the bodies of nine hikers were discovered under very unusual circumstances. Bizarre details of the scene, such as oddly cut tents, lack of clothing, unexplained injuries, radioactivity, reported fireballs in the sky, and various other anomalies have inspired countless conspiracy theories about what happened to the unfortunate young people, ranging from secret KGB weapons testing to an alien encounter to tribal murder to an attack by the fearsome Russian Yeti. On this episode of 13 O’Clock, Tom and Jenny delve into the mystery of the Dyatlov Pass Incident, discussing the various theories and trying to recreate a plausible scenario that could account for all the strange clues found at the site of the tragic deaths.
