13 O’Clock Episode 364: Florida Killer Gerard John Schaefer

Though he’s not all that well known nowadays, likely serial killer Gerard John Schaefer was once called one of the sickest killers in the country by an FBI agent who worked his case. Ultimately convicted of “only” two murders in 1973, authorities suspect he may be responsible for as many as 26 more; Schaefer himself claimed that number to be more than 80. Working as a sheriff’s deputy in Florida, Schaefer easily picked up his victims under the guise of helping them, after which he would bind them, rape them, and either strangle or shoot them. Schaefer himself was murdered by another inmate in 1995, and good riddance, really. Join Tom and Jenny on this Florida-specific tale of horror on a murderous episode 364.

13 O’Clock Episode 308: Florida Pirates

Arrrggghhh, mateys! On this swashbuckling installment, Tom and Jenny will be exploring the fascinating maritime history of the state they call home, Florida. From the early 1500s to well into the 19th century, numerous pirates prowled the long coastlines of the Sunshine State, preying on treasure-laden Spanish galleons that sailed the Atlantic and the Gulf of Mexico. Cities like St. Augustine on the east coast and Tampa on the west were hotbeds of pirate activity, and to this day, many attractions in the state boast numerous pirate artifacts, and the waters off both coasts are littered with shipwrecks. Famous pirates (or privateers, if you prefer) like Sir Francis Drake, Robert Searle, Henry Jennings, Black Caesar, and the possibly fictitious José Gaspar (after whom Tampa’s annual Gasparilla Festival is named) are among those who plundered the state’s shores, and we’re gonna yo-ho-ho right along with ’em on this seafaring and buccaneering episode 308.

13 O’Clock Episode 102 – The Snowtown Murders

On today’s soul-killing installment, we’re tackling what is probably one of the most notorious series of slayings in recent Australian history: the so-called Snowtown Murders, also known as the Bodies in Barrels murders. This horrific convulsion of torture and murder from the 1990s was committed by a ringleader named John Bunting and his extended group of henchmen, who targeted people they perceived as gay or “pedophiles,” and the crimes have been the subject of numerous documentaries in Australia, as well as a 2011 feature film. And if that topic wasn’t depressing enough, we’re also gonna talk about the ongoing case of the Croydon Cat Killer in the UK on our news segment, which is pretty much exactly what it sounds like: some chode (or chodes) who gets his jollies from slaughtering kitty cats and bunnies. Keep the liquor handy and buckle in for a rough ride on episode 102.
