Benedict Arnold was a complex figure in American history, initially celebrated as a skilled military leader during the American Revolutionary War. However, his legacy is forever tainted by his infamous betrayal of the American cause. Arnold’s frustration with lack of recognition and financial difficulties led him to conspire with the British, offering to surrender the strategic fort at West Point in exchange for money and a commission in the British Army. His treasonous actions earned him universal condemnation in the newly formed United States and immortalized his name as synonymous with betrayal. Join Tom and Jenny on this fascinating look at one of the most reviled men in U.S. history on a revolutionary episode 402.

13 O’Clock Episode 400: The Children’s Crusade

The Children’s Crusade of 1212 was a remarkable yet tragic episode in European history. Motivated by religious fervor and a desire to reclaim the Holy Land, thousands of children, led by figures like Stephen of Cloyes and Nicholas, embarked on a journey to Jerusalem. Mostly comprising youths, their innocence and zeal captured the imagination of many. But the crusade lacked organization and direction, leaving the children vulnerable to exploitation by adults. Ultimately, the crusade ended in tragedy, with many of the participants being sold into slavery or perishing along the way. The story of the Children’s Crusade, however, remains largely shrouded in mystery, and many scholars believe the movement to be a mix of factual and mythical events. Join Tom and Jenny on this fascinating journey into medieval history on a crusading episode 400.

13 O’Clock Episode 395: A History of Stockton State Insane Asylum

The Stockton State Hospital, formerly known as the Stockton State Insane Asylum, was built in 1853 and was California’s first facility for housing the mentally ill. But like most such facilities at this point in history, conditions in the hospital were less than ideal and may have included forced labor, sterilization, electroshock therapy, lobotomies, and perhaps burial in mass graves. In 2005, in fact, one of these mass graves was discovered on the grounds, and it’s believed that more than 4,000 patients were disposed of, unidentified, in just this way. Join Tom and Jenny on a fascinating journey through the history of the treatment of the mentally ill on this insanely troubling episode 395.

Like every other organization run by human beings, militaries are fallible, and sometimes the mistakes they make can cost massive amounts of money and/or lives. On this episode of 13 O’Clock, Tom and Jenny discuss a random sampling of some military mishaps of the past century, including the time the Japanese Navy launched a battleship and inadvertently flooded the coastal areas of Nagasaki in 1940; the time a B52 accidentally dropped two atomic bombs on North Carolina in 1961; and the time the British unwittingly invaded Spain in 2002. We’ll also discuss the crazy story of the USS William D. Porter, considered to be the unluckiest ship in the history of the world, as well as several other military mistakes ranging from ridiculous to tragic.
