13 O’Clock Episode 478: Faith Healers

Faith healers claim to cure physical and mental ailments through prayer, spiritual intervention, or divine power, often in religious settings like revivals or televangelism. From a skeptical perspective, these practices lack scientific evidence and are frequently exposed as frauds involving staged testimonials, planted audience members with fake illnesses, or exploitative scams that prey on vulnerable people seeking hope. Apparent “healings” are typically attributed to the placebo effect, spontaneous remissions, misdiagnoses, or emotional catharsis rather than supernatural causes, with secular investigations repeatedly debunking miracle claims. Critics highlight the absence of rigorous, reproducible proof—such as controlled studies showing rates of healing beyond natural or psychological explanations—and warn that reliance on faith healing can delay effective medical treatment, leading to harm.

13 O’Clock Episode 445: Cargo Cults of Melanesia

The “cargo cult” phenomenon refers to movements that emerged primarily in Melanesia during and after World War II. Indigenous groups, witnessing the influx of material goods (“cargo”) brought by Western military forces, believed these supplies were delivered through spiritual or ritual means rather than industrial production and global logistics. After the war, some communities attempted to attract more cargo by mimicking the behaviors and symbols of the soldiers—building mock airstrips, control towers, and even wooden radios—hoping it would bring back the goods. The term has since been used metaphorically to describe practices that imitate the superficial aspects of a process without understanding its underlying principles.

13 O’Clock Episode 423: The Tainted Legacy of Mother Teresa

Mother Teresa, revered for her humanitarian work among the poor in Calcutta, has also faced controversies. Critics argue that her charity, the Missionaries of Charity, emphasized suffering rather than providing adequate medical care, with reports of unsanitary conditions and lack of pain relief in her homes. She was also criticized for accepting donations from controversial figures, such as dictators and fraudsters, and for using these funds to expand her religious missions rather than improving healthcare facilities. Some detractors suggest she glorified suffering in line with her Catholic beliefs, prioritizing evangelism over alleviating pain. Despite these critiques, she remains a symbol of compassion for many.

13 O’Clock Episode 400: The Children’s Crusade

The Children’s Crusade of 1212 was a remarkable yet tragic episode in European history. Motivated by religious fervor and a desire to reclaim the Holy Land, thousands of children, led by figures like Stephen of Cloyes and Nicholas, embarked on a journey to Jerusalem. Mostly comprising youths, their innocence and zeal captured the imagination of many. But the crusade lacked organization and direction, leaving the children vulnerable to exploitation by adults. Ultimately, the crusade ended in tragedy, with many of the participants being sold into slavery or perishing along the way. The story of the Children’s Crusade, however, remains largely shrouded in mystery, and many scholars believe the movement to be a mix of factual and mythical events. Join Tom and Jenny on this fascinating journey into medieval history on a crusading episode 400.

13 O’Clock Episode 343 LIVE: Televangelist Scandals

The 1980s, it seemed, were the peak decade for scandals involving various televangelists, with all the heavy hitters of the era–Oral Roberts, Robert Tilton, Jimmy Swaggart, Jim and Tammy Faye Bakker–becoming embroiled in various shenanigans, most of which involved the televangelists themselves engaging in behavior that they actually preached against, thereby revealing themselves as unmitigated hypocrites. On this wild and crazy episode, Tom and Jenny delve into three famous televangelist scandals, including those of Ted Haggard, who vocally opposed gay marriage despite having relations with a male masseur and also taking crystal meth; Jimmy Swaggart, whose holier-than-thou demeanor was somewhat undercut by him being caught with prostitutes; and the infamous Jim and Tammy Faye Bakker, who were involved in various forms of fraud, on top of Jim engaging in a great deal of sexual misconduct. Cue the hallelujahs and dig out your checkbooks, we’re about to dive into some hypocritical hullabaloo on this spiritually bankrupt installment of 13 O’Clock.

13 O’Clock Episode 287 LIVE: Dr. John Kellogg and the Battle Creek Sanitarium

Who knew that cornflakes could be so fascinating?!? The name Kellogg is today remembered primarily in regards to breakfast cereals, but what some people may not know is that there’s a whole intriguing story behind Dr. John Kellogg, inventor of the cornflake among many other things, and the health spa he headed in Battle Creek, Michigan back in the 19th century. Kellogg, a Seventh-Day Adventist, was an early proponent of vegetarianism, light therapy, and physical exercise (among other, stranger things, like sexual abstinence and yogurt enemas) as a way to wellness. He was also remarkably prescient in his early development of nut butters, meat subsitutes, soy milk, granola, and other health foods that modern people take for granted. Unfortunately, he was also REALLY into eugenics, so can’t win ’em all. Join Tom and Jenny as they travel the Road to Wellville on this healthy history of Dr. Kellogg and his Battle Creek Sanitarium on a delicious and nutritious episode 287.

13 O’Clock Episode 213 LIVE: The Shroud of Turin and Other Religious Relics

On this holy (?) installment of 13 O’Clock, Tom and Jenny discuss the controversies surrounding the very famous Shroud of Turin, the long piece of linen that supposedly bears an image of Jesus. We also talk about many other fun (and really weird) religious relics, including foreskins, mummified heads, and other bizarre artifacts displayed to bolster people’s faith. Kneel down and pray for deliverance on the ecclesiastical smorgasbord that is episode 213.
