13 O’Clock Episode 350 LIVE: Revisiting the Hwaseong Serial Murders (Solved)

Way back on episode 151, we discussed the then-unsolved Hwaseong serial murders that took place in South Korea between 1986 and 1994, which were the basis for the awesome 2003 Bong Joon-ho film Memories of Murder. Since we did the show, however, the case has actually been solved: the crimes were evidently perpetrated by serial killer Lee Choon-jae, who was sent to prison in 1994 for murdering his sister-in-law but cannot be prosecuted for the numerous Hwaseong crimes because of Korea’s statute of limitations. Between 1971 and 1983, serial killer Robert Hansen is believed to have raped and murdered at least seventeen women in and around Anchorage, Alaska. Known as the Butcher Baker, Hansen became known for taking some of his victims out into the Alaskan wilderness and “hunting” them for sport, and at least two films–2007’s Naked Fear and 2013’s The Frozen Ground–have been based on his exploits. 13 O’Clock Episode 348 LIVE: The Boca Town Center Murders

Boca Raton, Florida is an affluent city about 45 miles north of Miami, known for its luxurious beaches and upscale malls. But one of these shopping meccas, the Boca Town Center, became notorious in 2007 for something far more tragic: a series of kidnappings and murders that remain unsolved to this day. Randi Gorenberg was shot in the course of a suspected robbery and dumped out of her SUV in brought daylight, and only a few months later, Nancy Bochicchio and her seven-year-old daughter Joey were abducted from the mall parking lot in the middle of the afternoon and later found murdered in their vehicle. Suspects in the crimes include fugitive gang member Michel Berrera and deceased serial killer Israel Keyes, but the cases are still open and under investigation. Back in the early 1960s, the scamming Hernández brothers rolled into the poor, isolated village of Yerba Buena, Mexico, and claimed they were prophets of the gods, telling fanciful tales of untold riches for the villagers if only they did whatever the two brothers said. This worked for a while, but when the townsfolk began to notice that they weren’t actually receiving any of the wealth the “prophets” promised, the Hernándezes realized they’d have to up their game. Recruiting a nearby, eighteen-year-old sex worker named Magdalena Solís and using simple magic tricks to pass her off as an ancient and all-powerful Aztec goddess named Cōātlīcue, the scam jumped into high gear once again. That is, until Magdalena started to get her own ideas about who was running the show, leading to one of the most horrific cult murder sprees we’ve ever discussed on 13 O’Clock, one that is truly right out of a horror movie. Join Tom and Jenny as they delve into the bizarre Mexican sex cult that eventually demanded human sacrifice, and discuss the woman at the center of it all, the serial killer sometimes known as The High Priestess of Blood.

Back in 1978, a dude appeared as an eligible bachelor on the popular TV show The Dating Game; he was described as a “successful photographer” who also enjoyed motorcycling and skydiving. He actually won a date with that episode’s bachelorette, but she later refused to go through with the date, admitting she found him creepy. And boy, did she hit that nail right on the head, because it turns out that the guy happened to be Rodney Alcala, a serial killer who would ultimately be convicted of eight murders and be suspected in more than a hundred more. Join Tom and Jenny as they break down the case of this butchering bachelor on a deadly date of an episode 339.

13 O’Clock Episode 322 LIVE: The Zodiac Killer Revisited (Again)

The Zodiac is easily one of the most infamous unsolved serial killer cases in American history. The unidentified perpetrator murdered at least five victims in the San Francisco Bay area in 1968 and 1969, usually targeting young couples. He also sent numerous communications to police, taunting them about their inability to catch him; many of these letters included odd ciphers, a few of which have yet to be decoded. Though many suspects have been put forward over the years, the case was given a shot in the arm in late 2021 by a group of cold case investigators, who claimed they had identified the Zodiac at last as a man named Gary Francis Poste, who died in 2018. Though law enforcement officials discounted their theory, it got oodles of media attention. And even more recently, in 2020, the famed Z-340 cipher was solved at last, though it contained no substantive information. In September of this year, a suspect named William McDuff Andrew was put forward. And just this month (October 2022), a researcher named Jarett Kobek published a book laying out the case for a previously unknown and very compelling suspect: a California man named Paul Doerr. On this chilling episode, Tom and Jenny will revisit the notorious crimes, and include all the latest updates in the ongoing investigation.

Episode 315 LIVE: The Toolbox Killers – Lawrence Bittaker and Roy Norris

Strap in, folks, because this is gonna be a rough one. Lawrence Bittaker and Roy Norris were two serial killers and rapists who tortured and murdered at least five teenage girls in Southern California in 1979. Better known as the Toolbox Killers, because of their use of various tools as means of torturing their victims, these two subhumans apparently took great delight in snatching young girls off the street and into their van, nicknamed “Murder Mac,” and doing unspeakable things to them, even recording the victims’ screams on occasion for the killers’ later enjoyment. Both Bittaker and Norris have thankfully dropped dead; sadly, they both died of natural causes instead of getting a little taste of what they inflicted on others. Get ready to delve into a grim and soul-crushing episode 315, and be sure to have the tissues and the blood pressure pills handy, as well as copious amounts of booze; you’re going to need it, trust me.

John George Haigh was a seemingly respectable middle-class man in 1940s England, working mundane jobs in advertising and finance. What many people would later discover, however, was that Haigh’s humdrum but charming veneer hid the heart of a ruthless serial killer who would target wealthy friends and acquaintances, steal their money, then kill them and dissolve their remains in barrels of sulfuric acid, thus earning him the nickname The Acid Bath Murderer. Haigh was convicted of six slayings, though he claimed to have killed more. Dip into the horror of this true crime saga on a bitter and brutal episode 313.
