For 29 terrifying days in the spring of 1992, an unidentified gunman traveled through Indiana, Kansas, and Missouri, targeting employees inside small retail stores near major interstate highways. Armed with a distinctive .22-caliber pistol, the man known as the I-70 Killer murdered six people—Robin Fuldauer, Patricia Magers, Patricia Smith, Michael “Mick” McCown, Nancy Kitzmiller, and Sarah Blessing—while stealing only small amounts of money. Witnesses described a thin, reddish-haired man with heavy or drooping eyelids, but despite composite sketches, ballistics evidence, possible links to later crimes in Texas and Indiana, and a renewed multiagency investigation, his identity remains unknown. More than three decades later, the I-70 Killer case remains one of America’s most disturbing unsolved serial-murder mysteries.

13 O’Clock Episode 517: Joanna Dennehy – The Peterborough Ditch Murders

Joanna Dennehy is one of the UK’s most notorious female serial killers, responsible for the 2013 Peterborough Ditch Murders in Cambridgeshire, England. Over the course of just ten days, Dennehy fatally stabbed three men—Lukasz Slaboszewski, John Chapman, and Kevin Lee—before dumping their bodies in roadside ditches around Peterborough. After fleeing the area with an accomplice, she traveled to Hereford, where she randomly stabbed two more men who survived their injuries. During the investigation, it emerged that Dennehy had spoken about killing for excitement and described murder as becoming “moreish,” shocking both investigators and the public. She pleaded guilty to three counts of murder and two counts of attempted murder, and in February 2014 she received a whole-life order, ensuring she will never be released from prison. The case remains one of Britain’s most disturbing modern serial murder investigations because of the apparent lack of conventional motive, Dennehy’s chilling lack of remorse, and the calculated disposal of her victims’ bodies.

The Stockholm Porn Murders (Swedish: Porrmorden) refer to a series of three unsolved knife murders that occurred in Stockholm, Sweden, in 1989, all targeting men who worked at porn video shops. The victims were Rajandran “Chris” Chinakaruppan (35, murdered March 22 outside his home after closing a sex shop in Tensta), Francisc Kiraly (stabbed inside the XXX Rated store while customers were present), and Mats Engström (stabbed while closing Lunda Video late at night in December). The attacks were brutal, with no signs of robbery or sexual assault, and the lack of a clear motive—possibly linked to anti-porn sentiment—left the case unsolved despite the fear it spread across the city.

Wayne Adam Ford (born December 3, 1961), a former U.S. Marine and long-haul truck driver from California, murdered at least four young women between October 1997 and October 1998. He targeted vulnerable victims—often hitchhikers or sex workers around age 25—raping and killing them by strangulation or stabbing before dismembering three of the bodies and scattering parts along highways, creeks, aqueducts, and remote areas across multiple counties. His confirmed victims were Kerry Ann Cummings (identified in 2023 via genetic genealogy after 25+ years as the “Torso Girl” found in Humboldt County’s Ryan Slough), Tina Renee Gibbs, Lanette Deyon White, and Patricia Anne Tamez (whose severed breast Ford carried as evidence). Suffering from prior traumatic brain injuries, borderline personality disorder, and deep resentment from a custody battle with his ex-wife, Ford dramatically turned himself in on November 3, 1998, at the Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office alongside his brother, confessing out of remorse and fear of killing again or orphaning his young son. Convicted in 2006 on four counts of first-degree murder with special circumstances, he received a death sentence and remains on death row at San Quentin. His rare self-surrender and the 2023 victim identification highlight themes of mobile serial offenders, mental health impacts, and advances in forensic genealogy.

Pazuzu Algarad, born John Alexander Lawson on August 12, 1978, in San Francisco, was a self-proclaimed Satanist whose descent into severe mental illness and substance abuse turned a quiet suburban home at 2749 Knob Hill Drive in Clemmons, North Carolina, into a notorious “house of horrors.” Legally changing his name in 2002 to invoke the Mesopotamian demon from The Exorcist, Algarad embraced extreme body modifications—including filed teeth and homemade facial tattoos—while living in squalor amid occult symbols, drugs, and rumors of rituals. He was linked to the 2009 murders of Joshua Fredrick Wetzler and Tommy Dean Welch, whose skeletal remains were discovered buried in the backyard in 2014, along with an accessory role in the 2010 shooting death of Joseph Emmrick Chandler. Arrested alongside accomplices Amber Burch and Krystal Matlock, Algarad died by suicide in prison in October 2015 before standing trial for the murders. His case highlights failures in mental health intervention, probation oversight, and community response, captivating true crime audiences through documentaries like Vice’s The Devil You Know.

Oba Chandler Jr. (October 11, 1946 – November 15, 2011) was an American convicted mass murderer, rapist, robber, and fraudster executed by lethal injection in Florida for the brutal 1989 triple murder of Joan Rogers and her teenage daughters Michelle (17) and Christe (14). The Ohio family, on vacation in Florida, was lured onto Chandler’s boat; the victims were bound, gagged, raped, and thrown into Tampa Bay while still alive, with concrete blocks tied to their necks. Their bodies were discovered floating days later. Chandler, an aluminum siding contractor with a long criminal history including prior rapes and robberies, was linked to the crime years later through his distinctive handwriting on a tourist pamphlet found in the victims’ car, which police publicized on billboards; a neighbor recognized it. He was also connected to the rape of Canadian tourist Judy Blair weeks earlier using a similar modus operandi, and later to the 1990 rape and murder of Ivelisse Berrios-Beguerisse. Convicted in 1994 and sentenced to death, Chandler maintained his innocence until his execution.

Colin Pitchfork is a British child murderer and rapist born on March 23, 1960, who became infamous as the first person in the world convicted of rape and murder using DNA profiling. A baker from Leicestershire, England, he raped and strangled two 15-year-old girls—Lynda Mann in Narborough in November 1983 and Dawn Ashworth in Enderby in July 1986—both attacks occurring along secluded footpaths near his home. Pitchfork had a history of sexual offenses, including indecent exposure, and even coerced a colleague into providing a fake blood sample during the initial DNA mass screening of local men. His eventual arrest in 1987 and conviction in 1988 marked a landmark in forensic science, pioneered by geneticist Alec Jeffreys. He received a life sentence and has been repeatedly denied parole or recalled to prison after brief releases due to ongoing public safety concerns.

Richard Cottingham, born November 25, 1946, is an American serial killer infamously known as the “Torso Killer” or “Times Square Ripper” due to his gruesome acts of mutilation, dismemberment, and torture in several murders. Active primarily from the mid-1960s through 1980 across New York and New Jersey, he targeted women, including sex workers in New York City’s Times Square area and others in suburban locations. Cottingham was arrested in May 1980 after being caught in the act in a motel, leading to convictions for multiple murders—including high-profile cases involving dismembered torsos left in hotels—and sentences of multiple life terms without parole. He is confirmed to have killed at least 19 women, with convictions for nine and additional confessions (including cold cases from as early as 1965 and into the 1970s) obtained in later years through interviews while imprisoned, such as admissions in 2022 to five Long Island murders and more recent confessions in 2026 to older New Jersey cases. Authorities believe his total victim count may be higher, though claims of up to 80–100 killings are considered exaggerated. Cottingham, who outwardly lived as a family man and computer operator, continues to serve his sentences in a New Jersey prison.

Sean Vincent Gillis was an American serial killer active in Louisiana during the 1990s, primarily in the Baton Rouge area. Between 1994 and 2003, Gillis murdered eight women, many of whom were vulnerable or marginalized, including sex workers. His crimes were marked by extreme violence, necrophilia, and post-mortem mutilation, setting him apart even amid a region plagued by multiple serial offenders at the time. Gillis was arrested in 2004 after DNA evidence linked him to several killings, and he later confessed to the murders. In 2008, he was convicted and sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole, closing one of Louisiana’s most disturbing criminal chapters.

Pedro Alonso López, known as the Monster of the Andes, was a Colombian serial killer born in 1948. He endured a traumatic childhood marked by abuse, homelessness, and sexual assault, which contributed to his later crimes. Active primarily in the late 1970s across Colombia, Ecuador, and Peru, López targeted young girls (mostly aged 8-12 from poor or indigenous families). He lured them with gifts, raped them, and strangled them, often deriving pleasure from their fear. He confessed to over 300 murders, though authorities verified a minimum of 110 in Ecuador (where he led police to dozens of graves). He was arrested in 1980 after a failed abduction, convicted of multiple murders, and sentenced to 16 years (Ecuador’s maximum at the time). Released early in 1994 for good behavior, he was deported to Colombia, institutionalized briefly as insane, declared sane, and freed on bail in 1998. López disappeared shortly after in 1999, and his whereabouts remain unknown as of 2026, with occasional unconfirmed rumors of sightings or vigilante justice.
