13 O’Clock Episode 425: The Railway Killers – John Duffy & David Mulcahy

John Duffy and David Mulcahy, known as the “Railway Killers,” were a pair of British serial rapists and murderers who terrorized the UK during the 1980s. The duo targeted women near railway stations in and around London. Their crimes, committed roughly between 1982 and 1986, involved a series of brutal rapes and three murders. Duffy, who was caught first, was convicted in 1988 for the attacks. He was sentenced to life imprisonment for two murders and four rapes. During his incarceration, Duffy eventually implicated Mulcahy as his accomplice. In 2000, after a renewed investigation and advances in forensic science, Mulcahy was arrested and convicted for his role in the crimes. The case is infamous for the psychological manipulation between the two, with Duffy often portrayed as being dominated by Mulcahy, and for the police’s extensive efforts to apprehend them, involving the early use of offender profiling.

Robert Ben Rhoades, known as the Truck Stop Killer, is an American serial killer and rapist who terrorized the highways of the United States during the late 1980s and early 1990s. A long-haul truck driver, Rhoades used his job to traverse the country, abducting, torturing, and murdering victims in his mobile torture chamber—a specially modified sleeper cab in his truck. His crimes came to light in 1990 when a police officer discovered a handcuffed woman in his truck during a routine traffic stop. Rhoades was subsequently arrested and linked to multiple murders. He was convicted and sentenced to life imprisonment without the possibility of parole. His exact number of victims remains unknown, but investigators believe he could be responsible for as many as fifty deaths.

Archibald Hall, aka Roy Fontaine and also known as the “Killer Butler” or “Monster Butler,” was a Scottish serial killer active in the late 1970s. Born in 1924, Hall led a double life as a charming and sophisticated butler while simultaneously engaging in criminal activities, including theft and murder. His victims included former employers and associates, whom he killed either for personal gain or to silence them. Hall’s reign of terror came to an end in 1978 when he was arrested and subsequently convicted of multiple murders. He spent the rest of his life in prison, where he died in 2002. His story is a chilling reminder of the potential for evil to hide behind a veneer of respectability and charm.

Lucy Letby, a neonatal nurse in the United Kingdom, gained national notoriety as a convicted murderer responsible for the deaths of multiple infants under her care. Employed at the Countess of Chester Hospital, Letby was initially trusted to care for the most vulnerable patients—premature and sick newborns. However, suspicions arose as an unusual number of infant deaths and unexplained health deteriorations occurred during her shifts. Following a meticulous investigation, Letby was found guilty of deliberately harming these infants through various means, including the administration of lethal doses of insulin and injecting air into their bloodstream. Her actions shocked the medical community and the public, leading to widespread discussions about hospital safety, oversight, and the psychological profiling of medical professionals.

High-profile cases such as Ted Bundy, who garnered a following of admirers despite his gruesome crimes, exemplify this phenomenon. Similarly, the case of Richard Ramirez, known as the “Night Stalker,” drew attention from women who sent him love letters and attended his trial. The allure of such individuals can be attributed to a variety of factors, including the media sensationalism surrounding their crimes and a desire for a perceived connection to danger or rebellion. Edward Paisnel, infamously known as the Beast of Jersey, was a notorious sex offender who terrorized the island of Jersey in the 1960s. A seemingly normal family man by day, Paisnel would often don a terrifying mask and sneak into homes at night, targeting women and children, and subjecting them to unspeakable acts of violence. His reign of terror instilled fear in the community, and it wasn’t until his eventual capture in 1971 that the extent of his depravity was fully revealed. Paisnel was convicted of multiple counts of assault and rape, leaving behind a legacy of trauma that scarred the island for years to come.
