13 O’Clock Episode 434: The Nazino Island Cannibal Tragedy

The Nazino Tragedy, also known as the Nazino Affair, occurred in May 1933 in the Soviet Union as part of Stalin’s forced collectivization and “dekulakization” policies. Thousands of people, primarily urban poor, petty criminals, and those accused of being “socially harmful elements,” were deported to Nazino Island in western Siberia. Lacking proper preparation, food, shelter, or tools for survival, these deportees endured horrific conditions. Within weeks, the island became a site of chaos and death. Many succumbed to starvation, exposure, and violence. There were also reports of cannibalism. Out of the roughly 6,000 deportees sent to the island, over 4,000 perished. The tragedy exposed the inhumanity of Soviet resettlement policies and remains a stark example of the brutality of Stalin’s regime.
