13 O’Clock Episode 306 LIVE: Spiritualism and Séances

Starting in the mid-nineteenth century, a new belief system that would come to be known as Spiritualism would sweep across the English-speaking world. Jump-started by the infamous Fox sisters and their supposed contact with spirits, the movement posited that certain people known as mediums had the ability to communicate with loved ones who had passed away. Many of these contacts were supposedly made at spooky séances, at which folks would sit in the dark, join hands, and have all sorts of supposedly paranormal shenanigans occur, such as tables tilting to and fro, glowing musical instruments appearing out of thin air, disembodied voices, and sometimes mediums emitting a luminous fluid called ectoplasm from their noses and mouths (eww). On this eerie and spiritual installment, join Tom and Jenny as they delve into the mysterious history of the Spiritualist movement and the tricks and tropes of the séance, including the method in which some fraudulent mediums accomplished their purportedly supernatural feats. It’s ghostly and ghastly all up in the parlor on this fun and phantasmic episode 306.

13 O’Clock Episode 66 – The Bloody Benders

Ah, the good old days, when you could pack up your family and lay claim to hundreds of acres of prairie and set about building a life for yourself through hard work and perseverance. Or, if you happened to pass through Kansas in around 1871 on the way to set up your homestead, you could alternately get your head bashed in and your throat slashed by a “family” of twisted serial killers. On this episode of 13 O’Clock, Tom and Jenny explore one of the darkest corridors of 19th century American history, focusing on the infamous Bloody Benders, a faux family of four murderers who are thought to have brutally killed at least twenty travelers, and also seem to have largely gotten away with it. Hop in your covered wagon for the journey into episode 66, and when you see the Benders’ inn on the side of the Osage Trail, best keep moseying on by.

13 O’Clock Episode 52 – EVP and Spirit Communication

Have you ever been making a recording in a creepy old house (like you do) and gotten a lot more than you bargained for, such as, say, disembodied voices turning up on your audio devices? Welcome to the eerie and controversial world of electronic voice phenomena (EVP), which has now become an integral part of any paranormal investigation. The internet is awash in spooky recordings of supposed voices of the dead, but how real is this phenomena, and can our video and audio technology really be used to communicate with the other side? On this installment of 13 O’Clock, Tom and Jenny discuss EVPs and spirit communication, play some examples of EVPs, break down the history of the concept of talking to ghosts through audio devices, and hone in on some of the better known figures in the field, such as Marcello Bacci and the radio he uses to talk to spirits. Tune in to our ghostly frequency and listen for the voices, because it’s time for episode 52.

13 O’Clock Episode 27 – Out of Body Experiences

You wake up suddenly in the middle of the night and find yourself floating up near the ceiling, looking down at your body. Or you’re undergoing traumatic surgery or involved in an accident, and you feel as though you’re being pulled upwards into a bright light with welcoming celestial beings showing you your past and your future. Out of body and near death experiences are surprisingly common, but what does it all mean? Do we actually have “souls” that are separate from our physical bodies? Or is there some aspect of our brain wiring that is responsible for the sensation of being outside of the physical realm?

On this episode, Tom and Jenny discuss various aspects of the OBE and the NDE, including paranormal explanations, results of various consciousness experiments being performed in the lab, similarities with sleep paralysis and lucid dream scenarios, and common aspects of the experience across cultures. In the second segment, Tom also describes his own OBE and NDE, and the insights he gained from experiencing them. Tether your astral body to your silver cord and listen in as we temporarily escape from our flesh envelopes and explore the outer dimensions.

13 O’Clock Episode 25 -The Scole Experiment

Often bandied about as one of the most compelling investigations into the reality of spirit communication, the Scole Experiment was actually a five-year-long series of around 500 seances attended by both mediums and scientists in various fields. The list of witnessed phenomena seems impressive: disembodied spirit voices, moving lights, tilting tables, and the appearance of bizarre images and writing on unexposed film kept in a locked box. But how solid is the evidence gathered by the Scole experimenters really? On this episode, Tom and Jenny give an overview of the project and examine some of the problems with methodology that cast doubt on  the conclusions drawn by the experimenters.

13 O’Clock Episode 21 – Houdini vs. The Spiritualists

Harry Houdini, of course, is the legendary illusionist whose unbelievable escapes still amaze, even a century later. But near the end of his short life, Houdini took on a new crusade, battling against the spiritualists and fraudulent mediums who he felt were giving people false hope that the living could talk to the dead. On this episode of 13 O’Clock, Tom and Jenny discuss Houdini’s entry into the murky world of spiritualism and séances, his famed debunking of medium Mina Crandon (aka Margery), his shattered friendship with spiritualist advocate Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, and the ten-year quest by his widow Bess to contact Houdini after his death, using a special, agreed-upon code.

13 O’Clock Episode 10 – Nazis and the Occult

Oh, those Nazis. Murderous fucksticks? Sure. But also, allegedly, seekers after the mystical powers of the universe, man. On this episode, Tom and Jenny (but mostly Tom, because he loves this shit) have a rambling discussion about the rumored occult underpinnings of the Third Reich, from the Thule Society and the mysterious Vril, to the experiments with psychic powers and super-soldiers, to the Nazi Bell UFO, to the supposed archaeological expeditions to find the Holy Grail, the Spear of Destiny, and the entrance to a hollow earth.
