13 O’Clock Episode 310 LIVE: The Burger Chef and Austin Yogurt Shop Murders

Working in the fast food industry is something of a rite of passage for many American teenagers (and others), but in some tragic cases, these workplaces can turn deadly. In 1978, for example, four employees of a Burger Chef restaurant in Indiana vanished, leaving an empty safe behind. While police initially suspected the workers had stolen the money and taken off, the discovery of their bodies a couple of days later confirmed that the four had been the victims of a kidnapping and murder. Then, in 1991, four teenage girls at a Texas yogurt shop were brutally attacked after closing; two of them were raped, and all were murdered, in a crime that has still never been solved. Take a journey through the darker side of fast food on this workplace horror installment of 13 O’Clock.

13 O’Clock Episode 305 LIVE: Burke and Hare

In Edinburgh, Scotland, in the first half of the 19th century, great progress was being made in the field of anatomy. Only problem was, medical researchers needed cadavers for their studies, and since the law was very strict about which corpses could legally be dissected, there was something of a shortage of materials for doctors and surgeons to use. Thus, the practice of grave robbing began to increase, as people looking for ready cash would dig up fresh bodies and sell them on to medical schools. William Burke and William Hare, though, decided grave robbing was a mug’s game, and figured they’d be able to make much more money if, instead of procuring victims who were already dead, they would simply make their own dead bodies, and cut out the middle man, as it were. Ultimately, Burke and Hare are believed to be responsible for the murders of sixteen people, and their notoriety was so profound that they eventually became the subject of numerous books, plays, and movies, and their practice even led to the coining of a new English word, “burking,” referring to the crime of murdering a person for the purpose of selling the corpse. Join Tom and Jenny as we dig into the cadaverous past on this grave and gruesome episode 305.

It’s difficult to overstate how all-encompassing the figure of Ned Kelly is to Australian culture. The infamous bushranger, or rural outlaw, cut a swath of robbery and violence across Victoria and New South Wales in the 19th century, accompanied by his gang, who in later years kitted themselves out in homemade bulletproof armor to protect themselves during police shootouts. Because Ned and the Kelly gang targeted the police, the government of Victoria, and the British Empire, and because he wrote an impassioned letter justifying his crimes and seeking justice for his family and other members of the rural poor, Kelly became something of a folk hero, with sympathizers throughout the land who helped him evade capture. To this day, the myth of Ned Kelly looms large, and stands as a distillation of the independent and anti-authoritarian spirit of the Australian populace. The legendary bandit has been the subject of countless films, books, paintings, and songs over the years, and now Tom and Jenny are going down under to talk about him on a wild and woolly episode 300.

Over a terrifying three-week period in October of 2002, residents of a large area comprising Washington DC, Maryland, and Virginia felt as though they were under siege, as a series of random sniper attacks took the lives of ten people and wounded three others. When the culprits were finally caught, it turned out to be a two-man team: 41-year-old John Allen Muhammad and his 17-year-old protégé Lee Boyd Malvo. The pair’s killing spree along the Beltway, authorities discovered, was only the latest barrage in a trail of destruction that had begun in February of 2002, in which Muhammad and Malvo had perpetrated several murders and robberies in Alabama, Arizona, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Maryland, Texas, Washington State, and in Washington, D.C., which resulted in seven deaths and seven wounded. This brought the death toll at the hands of the so-called Beltway Snipers up to 17. What motivated these seemingly normal men to commit such atrocities?
