The Ripper Crew was a notorious group of serial killers who terrorized Chicago in the early 1980s. Led by Robin Gecht, the group included Edward Spreitzer and brothers Andrew and Thomas Kokoraleis. They were responsible for the brutal abduction, torture, mutilation, and murder of multiple women, often targeting prostitutes or vulnerable individuals. Their crimes were particularly gruesome, involving sadistic rituals that reportedly had occult connections. While Gecht, believed to be the ringleader, avoided the death penalty and received a life sentence, some of his accomplices faced capital punishment or lengthy prison terms. The Ripper Crew remains one of the most disturbing cases in Chicago’s criminal history.

New Orleans is steeped in vampire lore, with its rich history and dark mysteries intertwining to create a legacy of legendary creatures of the night. Among the most famous are the Carter Brothers, believed to be powerful, immortal vampires who once roamed the French Quarter, feeding on the blood of the city’s elite. Then there’s Jacques St. Germain, an enigmatic and charismatic figure from the 18th century, rumored to have lived for centuries due to his supposed vampiric nature. His opulent lifestyle and strange immortality added to his mystique, making him a focal point in New Orleans vampire legends. Perhaps the most eerie of all are the Casket Girls, young women brought to New Orleans in the 18th century, whose mysterious deaths and rumored vampiric ties became a chilling part of the city’s folklore. These figures, each with their own dark tale, continue to fuel the fascination with New Orleans’ vampire mythology, blending the line between fact and fiction.

13 O’Clock Episode 447: Scottish Serial Killer Peter Tobin

Peter Tobin was a notorious Scottish serial killer and sex offender whose chilling crimes spanned decades before his eventual capture. Born on August 27, 1946, in Johnstone, Renfrewshire, Tobin’s criminal history began with petty offenses but escalated to extreme violence. He is confirmed to have murdered at least three women—Angelika Kluk, Vicky Hamilton, and Dinah McNicol—though authorities suspect his victim count could be higher, potentially making him one of Britain’s most prolific killers. Tobin’s modus operandi often involved luring vulnerable women, and his crimes remained undetected for years due to his transient lifestyle and ability to evade suspicion. His gruesome acts came to light in 2006 when the remains of Angelika Kluk were discovered hidden beneath the floorboards of a church in Glasgow where Tobin worked as a handyman under an alias. Subsequent investigations linked him to the earlier murders of Hamilton and McNicol, whose bodies were found buried in the garden of his former home. Sentenced to life imprisonment without parole, Tobin died in October 2022 at age 76, taking the full extent of his atrocities to the grave, though speculation persists about additional unsolved cases tied to him.

13 O’Clock Episode 446: Serial Killer Bobby Joe Long

Bobby Joe Long was an American serial killer and rapist who terrorized Florida in the early 1980s. Active primarily in the Tampa Bay area, Long abducted, sexually assaulted, and murdered at least ten women in 1984. He had a history of sexual violence against women and was known for using classified ads to find victims before escalating to a spree of brutal killings. His capture was largely credited to Lisa McVey, a 17-year-old girl whom he abducted but later released; her detailed description of her ordeal helped authorities track him down. Long was convicted and sentenced to death, ultimately being executed by lethal injection on May 23, 2019.

Robert Lee Yates Jr. is an American serial killer convicted of murdering at least 16 people, primarily sex workers, in Spokane, Washington, during the 1990s. A former military helicopter pilot, Yates led a seemingly ordinary life with his wife and children, masking his violent crimes. His method often involved picking up victims, shooting them in the head, and dumping their bodies in rural or secluded areas. Yates was arrested in 2000 after DNA evidence linked him to multiple murders. Initially sentenced to life in prison, he later received the death penalty, which was commuted to life without parole when Washington abolished capital punishment in 2018.

13 O’Clock Episode 443: Serial Killer Earle Nelson – The Gorilla Man

Earle Nelson, known as “The Gorilla Killer,” was an American serial killer who terrorized the United States and Canada in the 1920s. Born in 1897, he exhibited signs of violent and erratic behavior from an early age, possibly due to a childhood head injury. Nelson mostly targeted landladies and women offering rooms for rent, using his charm to gain their trust before brutally strangling them. His killing spree spanned multiple states and provinces, with at least 22 confirmed victims, though the actual number may have been higher. His crimes were characterized by extreme savagery, often leaving his victims’ bodies hidden in their own homes. After an extensive manhunt, Nelson was finally arrested in Canada in 1927 and later executed by hanging. His gruesome acts and the wide-ranging scope of his crimes made him one of North America’s most notorious early serial killers.

The Pike County massacre refers to the grisly killings of eight members of the Rhoden family in rural Pike County, Ohio, on April 21-22, 2016. The victims, spanning three generations, were shot execution-style at four separate homes, sparking one of Ohio’s largest murder investigations. The case involved family disputes, custody battles, and accusations of premeditated violence. In 2018, four members of the Wagner family—George “Billy” Wagner III, Angela Wagner, and their sons, George Wagner IV and Edward “Jake” Wagner—were charged with the murders. Authorities alleged the Wagners meticulously planned and carried out the killings due to a custody conflict over Jake Wagner’s daughter with one of the victims, Hanna Rhoden. The investigation involved extensive evidence, including surveillance footage, firearms, and forensic data. Jake Wagner eventually pleaded guilty in 2021, admitting his role in exchange for avoiding the death penalty, and implicated his family members. Trials for the others, including George Wagner IV, followed, drawing national attention.

13 O’Clock Episode 439: Bryan Kohberger and the University of Idaho Murders

In November 2022, four University of Idaho students—Kaylee Goncalves, Madison Mogen, Xana Kernodle, and Ethan Chapin—were tragically killed in a brutal stabbing attack at an off-campus residence in Moscow, Idaho. The incident occurred in the early morning hours of November 13, sparking widespread fear and grief in the small college town. The victims were found in their shared home near the university campus, and the case quickly drew national attention due to the violent nature of the crime and the initial lack of leads. The investigation spanned weeks, involving local, state, and federal authorities. In late December 2022, Bryan Kohberger, a 28-year-old Ph.D. criminology student at Washington State University, was arrested and charged with the murders. Authorities linked him to the crime through DNA evidence, cell phone records, and surveillance footage. The case remains ongoing as Kohberger awaits trial.

13 O’Clock Episode 438: The Pulse Nightclub Shooting

The Pulse nightclub shooting was a tragic mass shooting that occurred on June 12, 2016, in Orlando, Florida. A gunman, armed with an assault rifle and a handgun, opened fire at Pulse, a popular LGBTQ+ nightclub, killing 49 people and injuring 53 others in what became one of the deadliest mass shootings in U.S. history at the time. The attack, later identified as an act of domestic terrorism and a hate crime, targeted a community gathering space that symbolized inclusivity and safety. The shooter, Omar Mateen, was killed in a standoff with police after a three-hour ordeal. The tragedy not only devastated the victims’ families and the LGBTQ+ community but also sparked national debates on gun control, LGBTQ+ rights, and terrorism. In its aftermath, vigils and memorials were held worldwide to honor the victims and advocate for stronger efforts to combat hate and violence.

13 O’Clock Episode 437: Necrophile Morgue Worker Kenneth Douglas

Kenneth Douglas worked at an Ohio morgue from 1976 to 1992, and tended to drink heavily and sometimes smoke crack while on the job (as one does). He also, horrifically, had sex with the dead bodies, perhaps as many as 100 corpses over the years. He was only caught years later when semen on a 1982 murder victim matched his DNA and not the killer’s. Douglas was eventually sent to prison for an alarmingly brief time and the families of the violated women sued the county for their cavalier attitude about the whole situation. Join Tom and Jenny on this disturbing journey into the sick fantasies of one Ohio weirdo (and more) on this revolting episode of 13 O’Clock.
