The Magdalene Laundries in Ireland were institutions run primarily by Catholic religious orders from the 18th to the late 20th century, where women and girls were sent to work, often under harsh conditions. These laundries were originally intended to house so-called “fallen women”—those deemed to have strayed morally, such as unmarried mothers, victims of abuse, or women considered a burden to their families. In reality, many women were sent there for reasons as trivial as being perceived as flirtatious or simply as a means of social control. The women endured grueling, unpaid labor, mostly in laundry services, under strict supervision, and often suffered physical and emotional abuse. It wasn’t until the late 20th century that the existence of these laundries was fully exposed, leading to public outcry, government inquiries, and eventual apologies from the Irish state, though unsurprisingly not the Catholic Church.
