Lucy Letby, a neonatal nurse in the United Kingdom, gained national notoriety as a convicted murderer responsible for the deaths of multiple infants under her care. Employed at the Countess of Chester Hospital, Letby was initially trusted to care for the most vulnerable patients—premature and sick newborns. However, suspicions arose as an unusual number of infant deaths and unexplained health deteriorations occurred during her shifts. Following a meticulous investigation, Letby was found guilty of deliberately harming these infants through various means, including the administration of lethal doses of insulin and injecting air into their bloodstream. Her actions shocked the medical community and the public, leading to widespread discussions about hospital safety, oversight, and the psychological profiling of medical professionals.

13 O’Clock Episode 408: The Gruesome Murder of Shad Thyrion by Female Killer Taylor Schabusiness

Shad Thyrion, a 24-year-old resident of Green Bay, Wisconsin, was brutally murdered on February 23, 2022. The gruesome nature of the crime sent shockwaves through the community and garnered national attention. Shad’s dismembered body was discovered in the basement of his parents’ home, leading to a swift investigation by local authorities. Taylor Schabusiness, a 25-year-old woman, was arrested and charged with the murder after evidence, including bloody clothing and body parts, was found linking her to the crime. Schabusiness almost immediately admitted to the killing, revealing disturbing details about the events leading to Thyrion’s death. The case highlighted issues of mental health and substance abuse, as Schabusiness had a history of both. Shad Thyrion’s tragic death left his family and friends devastated, and the community mourned the loss of a young life taken in such a violent manner. 13 O’Clock Episode 407: Leopold & Loeb – Committing the “Perfect” Crime

Leopold and Loeb, two wealthy and highly intelligent University of Chicago students, shocked the nation in 1924 with their murder of 14-year-old Bobby Franks in what they claimed was an attempt to commit the “perfect crime.” Nathan Leopold, 19, and Richard Loeb, 18, both from affluent families, meticulously planned and executed the abduction and killing, believing their superior intellects would enable them to evade justice. However, a key piece of evidence, Leopold’s distinctive eyeglasses found near the body, led to their swift arrest. Their trial drew immense media attention, particularly due to the defense mounted by renowned attorney Clarence Darrow, who argued against the death penalty on grounds of their mental states and the influence of Nietzsche’s philosophy. Ultimately, the pair received life sentences plus 99 years, with Loeb dying in prison in 1936 and Leopold being released on parole in 1958. The case remains infamous for its chilling combination of privilege, intelligence, and amorality.

High-profile cases such as Ted Bundy, who garnered a following of admirers despite his gruesome crimes, exemplify this phenomenon. Similarly, the case of Richard Ramirez, known as the “Night Stalker,” drew attention from women who sent him love letters and attended his trial. The allure of such individuals can be attributed to a variety of factors, including the media sensationalism surrounding their crimes and a desire for a perceived connection to danger or rebellion. Edward Paisnel, infamously known as the Beast of Jersey, was a notorious sex offender who terrorized the island of Jersey in the 1960s. A seemingly normal family man by day, Paisnel would often don a terrifying mask and sneak into homes at night, targeting women and children, and subjecting them to unspeakable acts of violence. His reign of terror instilled fear in the community, and it wasn’t until his eventual capture in 1971 that the extent of his depravity was fully revealed. Paisnel was convicted of multiple counts of assault and rape, leaving behind a legacy of trauma that scarred the island for years to come. 13 O’Clock Episode 398: Randall Woodfield, The I-5 Killer

Between October of 1980 and February of 1981, a perpetrator known as the I-5 Bandit or the I-5 Killer terrorized Oregon, Washington, and California, raping and murdering women and girls in a frenzied spree of violence. The culprit was apprehended in March of 1981 and turned out to be a man by the name of Randall Woodfield, a former football player from an upper-middle-class family who was drafted by the Green Bay Packers in 1974 (but never played for them professionally). Though Woodfield was ultimately convicted of only one murder, he is suspected to have committed between 25 and 44, and he is currently serving a life sentence plus 165 years. 13 O’Clock Episode 394: Harry Edward Greenwell – The Days Inn Killer, aka The I-65 Killer

Between 1987 and 1991 in the American Midwest, an unknown individual was prowling Interstate 65 in Indiana and Kentucky, raping and murdering at least three women in roadside motels. The perpetrator, variously known as The Days Inn Killer or the I-65 Killer, remained at large for years, and it wasn’t even until 2008 that authorities linked the crimes and realized they were dealing with a serial killer. Sadly, by the time he was identified via DNA as Kentucky railroad worker Harry Edward Greenwell, the monster was already dead, having succumbed to cancer in 2013 while living a normal, quiet life in Iowa. Join Tom and Jenny as they discuss another of America’s “forgotten” serial killers on the road trip nightmare known as Episode 394.

13 O’Clock Episode 393: The Abduction and Murder of Adam Walsh

In 1981, six-year-old Adam Walsh went to a Sears store with his mother in a mall in Hollywood, Florida. His mother left him at an Atari kiosk with several older boys to play games, but when she returned a few minutes later, all the boys, including Adam, were gone. About two weeks later, Adam’s severed head was found floating in a canal more than a hundred miles from where he had been abducted. The case was closed in 2008 after authorities became satisfied that drifter Ottis Toole, an associate of Henry Lee Lucas, had killed the child, but some experts aren’t so sure. The high-profile kidnapping and murder caused a public panic about “stranger danger,” leading not only to several new laws and the formation of the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children but also to the long activist career of Adam’s father John Walsh, who went on to host America’s Most Wanted for decades, as well as several other similar programs. Join Tom and Jenny on a journey into one of the most infamous and heartbreaking abduction cases in American history on a tragic episode 393.

13 O’Clock Episode 392: Famous Con Man Frank Abagnale Jr.

In 2002, Steven Spielberg released a film called Catch Me If You Can, starring Leonardo DiCaprio as a con man being pursued by Tom Hanks’s dogged FBI agent. The movie was loosely based on a 1980 autobiography of the same name by convicted fraudster Frank Abagnale Jr., who claimed all sorts of outrageous criminal exploits. For example, beginning in the 1960s, Abagnale supposedly impersonated an airline pilot, a doctor, and a lawyer, all the while passing bad checks reportedly totaling over two million dollars. After inevitably getting caught, Abagnale decided to go straight and use his personal experience to help authorities combat fraud. In later years, however, it’s come to light that many of the claims Abagnale made in his autobiography may be wildly exaggerated or outright fabrications, so is it possible the con man is still conning the public after supposedly changing his ways? Join Tom and Jenny on this roller coaster ride of graft and chicanery on a duplicitous episode 392.

13 O’Clock Episode 390: Adolfo Constanzo and the Narco-Satanists

Serial killer and cult leader Adolfo Constanzo, between 1986 and 1989, led the drug-trafficking and occult sacrifice gang that came to be known as either the Matamoros Cult or the Narco-Satanists. Along with his companion and self-professed witch Sara Aldrete, the cult was responsible for the torture and murder of at least fifteen people, and possibly dozens more. Their most infamous crime was the horrifying torture and murder of American pre-med student Mark Kilroy, who was abducted while in Mexico for spring break.
