13 O’Clock Episode 473: Dr. Sam Sheppard – The Case Behind The Fugitive

The case of Dr. Sam Sheppard, a Cleveland neurosurgeon, became a sensational legal saga that inspired the TV series and film The Fugitive. In 1954, Sheppard was convicted of murdering his pregnant wife, Marilyn, in their Bay Village home. Marilyn was found bludgeoned to death, and Sheppard claimed an intruder attacked him after he discovered the crime. Despite his defense, the prosecution argued Sheppard killed his wife due to an extramarital affair, and he was sentenced to life in prison. The case drew massive media attention, with biased coverage influencing public opinion and the trial. In 1966, the U.S. Supreme Court overturned Sheppard’s conviction, citing unfair publicity and judicial errors. A retrial acquitted him, but Sheppard struggled to rebuild his life, dying in 1970. His son later pursued a wrongful conviction lawsuit, but the case remained unresolved. The Sheppard case, with its themes of a wrongfully accused man on the run, directly inspired the 1960s TV series The Fugitive and the 1993 Harrison Ford film.

13 O’Clock Episode 426: The Strange Disappearance of Patti Adkins (Plus Bonus Sidetracks)

Patti Adkins, a 29-year-old mother from Marysville, Ohio, mysteriously disappeared on June 29, 2001, after leaving her workplace, the Honda automotive plant. She had told family and friends that she was going on a week-long vacation with a co-worker she had been secretly dating for several years. However, she was never seen again. Investigators learned that this co-worker, who was married, denied any romantic involvement and claimed he had no plans with Patti. Despite thorough investigations, including searches of his vehicle and property, no substantial evidence was found to implicate him or locate Patti. Her body has never been found, and the case remains unsolved, casting a lingering shadow of mystery and heartbreak over her loved ones.

In December of 1908, an eighty-three-year-old woman named Marion Gilchrist was beaten to death in her home in Glasgow, Scotland, the victim of an apparent robbery gone wrong. Shortly afterward, police collared a man named Oscar Slater for the crime, even though there was clear evidence that he was not the killer. Despite this, Slater was eventually convicted and sentenced to hang, though several influential people, including Sherlock Holmes creator Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, rallied to his defense. On this old-time crime installment of 13 O’Clock, Tom and Jenny dive into this fascinating case of murder and wrongful conviction, one of the most appalling incidences of miscarriages of justice in Scottish legal history.

No one likes a bully, and on tonight’s true crime discussion, Tom and Jenny talk about a notorious case whereby essentially an entire small town decided to take matters into their own hands. Ken Rex McElroy had been committing all kinds of horrendous crimes for decades and largely escaped justice, but one day in 1981, dozens of townsfolk in Skidmore, Missouri — who had been living in fear of this man for as long as they could remember — decided they’d had enough. Ken was gunned down in broad daylight in front of between thirty and ninety witnesses, and to this day, no one in town has made a peep as to who the responsible parties were. Is vigilante justice ever…well, justifiable? Wade into the quagmire with Tom and Jenny on a vengeance-fueled episode 264.
