As religions go, Mormonism (aka the Church of Latter-Day Saints) seems peculiarly American: founded by the self-proclaimed prophet Joseph Smith in upstate New York in the 1820s, the movement today boasts more than 16 million adherents all over the world. Known by non-Mormons mainly for their beliefs about golden plates and polygamy, their missions and door-to-door proselytizing, their magic underwear, and their eschewing of caffeine, alcohol, gambling, pornography, and premarital sex, they remain a somewhat insular group, seemingly content with their status as outsiders. Their history, though, is also pretty fascinating, featuring at least three “wars,” various massacres, and a more recent forger who, by the way, also murdered people. Oh, and there’s also that whole Warren Jeffs thing, which involved a fundamentalist offshoot of the main church.
