13 O’Clock Episode 473: Dr. Sam Sheppard – The Case Behind The Fugitive

The case of Dr. Sam Sheppard, a Cleveland neurosurgeon, became a sensational legal saga that inspired the TV series and film The Fugitive. In 1954, Sheppard was convicted of murdering his pregnant wife, Marilyn, in their Bay Village home. Marilyn was found bludgeoned to death, and Sheppard claimed an intruder attacked him after he discovered the crime. Despite his defense, the prosecution argued Sheppard killed his wife due to an extramarital affair, and he was sentenced to life in prison. The case drew massive media attention, with biased coverage influencing public opinion and the trial. In 1966, the U.S. Supreme Court overturned Sheppard’s conviction, citing unfair publicity and judicial errors. A retrial acquitted him, but Sheppard struggled to rebuild his life, dying in 1970. His son later pursued a wrongful conviction lawsuit, but the case remained unresolved. The Sheppard case, with its themes of a wrongfully accused man on the run, directly inspired the 1960s TV series The Fugitive and the 1993 Harrison Ford film.

13 O’Clock Episode 472: The Von Erich Family Curse

The Von Erich family, originally the Adkissons, became legendary in professional wrestling under patriarch Fritz Von Erich (real name Jack Adkisson), who adopted the “Von Erich” persona as a villainous gimmick with implied Nazi roots during his career in the 1950s and beyond. The so-called “Von Erich curse” is a colloquial term and myth that emerged from a series of devastating tragedies that claimed the lives of five out of Fritz’s six sons, fueling rumors of a supernatural affliction tied to the family name or their high-pressure wrestling legacy.

The tragedies began in 1959 when the eldest son, Jack Jr., aged 6, was electrocuted by a trailer wire and drowned in a puddle outside the family home. David Von Erich died in 1984 at age 25 during a wrestling tour in Japan, officially from acute enteritis but with speculation of a drug overdose. Kerry Von Erich, a former NWA World Heavyweight Champion, lost his right foot in a 1986 motorcycle accident, struggled with painkiller addiction, and died by suicide in 1993 at age 33. Mike Von Erich suffered toxic shock syndrome after shoulder surgery in 1985, leading to brain damage; he died by suicide in 1987 at age 23. Chris Von Erich, the youngest, battled health issues including asthma and brittle bones, and died by suicide in 1991 at age 21. The sole survivor, Kevin Von Erich, has dismissed the curse idea as “ridiculous,” attributing the deaths to personal struggles, family pressures, and coincidences rather than any supernatural force.

The family’s story, marked by fame in World Class Championship Wrestling (WCCW) and profound loss, has been dramatized in the 2023 film The Iron Claw, which explores themes of paternal expectations and the “curse” as a metaphor for their hardships. Despite the myth’s persistence, it’s widely seen as a tragic confluence of accidents, health issues, substance abuse, and mental health challenges rather than a literal hex.

13 O’Clock Episode 471: The Storyville Slayer

The Storyville Slayer, also known as the New Orleans Serial Killer, is an unidentified perpetrator believed to be responsible for the murders of at least 12 to as many as 27 women, predominantly Black and transgender individuals involved in prostitution and often struggling with drug addiction, in and around New Orleans, Louisiana, between 1991 and 1996. The killer’s modus operandi typically involved rape followed by strangulation, beating, or drowning, with victims’ nude bodies dumped in remote locations such as swamps, canals, ditches, or along highways near Lake Pontchartrain, leading to severe decomposition and challenges in identification and evidence collection. Suspects included New Orleans police officer Victor Gant, who was investigated but never charged due to inconclusive DNA evidence in at least two cases, and taxi driver Russell Ellwood, who was convicted in 1999 of one related murder (Cheryl Lewis) and sentenced to life imprisonment without parole before dying in prison in 2014. Despite these developments and a 1997 hoax call to the Howard Stern Show claiming responsibility for 12 killings, the majority of the murders remain unsolved.
