13 O’Clock Episode 470: Stephen Port – The Grindr Killer

Stephen John Port, born February 22, 1975, in Southend-on-Sea, Essex, is a British serial killer and rapist known as the “Grindr Killer.” Between June 2014 and September 2015, he murdered four young gay men—Anthony Walgate (23), Gabriel Kovari (22), Daniel Whitworth (21), and Jack Taylor (25)—in Barking, East London. Port lured his victims through gay dating apps, primarily Grindr, using false personas, claiming to be an Oxford graduate or Royal Navy member. He drugged them with lethal doses of GHB, a date-rape drug, raped them, and dumped their bodies near his flat, often with planted GHB bottles to suggest overdoses.

Port, a former chef who worked at a Stagecoach bus depot, lived alone in Barking. Described as a loner with a childlike personality, he had a history of bullying and came out as gay in his mid-twenties. His method involved spiking drinks with GHB, rendering victims unconscious, and he also assaulted several other men. Three victims were found in the graveyard of St Margaret’s Church, Barking, two by the same dog walker. A fake suicide note planted with Whitworth’s body falsely implicated him in Kovari’s death.

Initially, police failed to link the deaths, treating them as non-suspicious overdoses, despite concerns from victims’ families and similarities in the cases. Port was briefly imprisoned for perverting the course of justice after lying about Walgate’s death but continued killing after his release. It was only after Taylor’s death, prompted by family advocacy and CCTV evidence, that police connected the cases. Port was arrested on October 15, 2015, and convicted on November 23, 2016, of four murders, multiple rapes, sexual assaults, and administering poison. He received a whole-life sentence, ensuring he will never be released, and is incarcerated at HMP Belmarsh.

13 O’Clock Episode 469: The Trail of Tears

The Trail of Tears refers to the forced relocation of approximately 60,000 Native Americans from their ancestral lands in the southeastern United States to designated Indian Territory west of the Mississippi River, primarily in present-day Oklahoma, during the 1830s. This tragic event primarily affected the Cherokee, Creek, Choctaw, Chickasaw, and Seminole nations, collectively known as the Five Civilized Tribes, due to their adoption of certain European-American cultural practices.

The relocation was driven by the Indian Removal Act of 1830, signed into law by President Andrew Jackson. The act authorized the federal government to negotiate treaties with Native American tribes to exchange their lands for territory in the West. Despite resistance, including legal challenges like the Cherokee Nation v. Georgia (1831) and Worcester v. Georgia (1832) cases, which affirmed Cherokee sovereignty, the federal government enforced removal, often ignoring Supreme Court rulings.

The Cherokee Nation’s removal, known as the Trail of Tears, is particularly well-documented. In 1838–1839, approximately 16,000 Cherokees were forcibly marched over 1,200 miles under harsh conditions. Inadequate food, clothing, and shelter, combined with disease and brutal winter weather, led to the deaths of an estimated 4,000 to 5,000 Cherokees, roughly a quarter of the population.

Other tribes faced similar hardships. The Choctaw were among the first to be removed in 1831, suffering thousands of deaths due to exposure, starvation, and disease. The Creek, Chickasaw, and Seminole also endured forced marches, with significant loss of life and cultural disruption. The Seminole resisted through guerilla warfare in the Second Seminole War (1835–1842), but many were eventually relocated.

The Trail of Tears remains a somber chapter in American history, symbolizing the devastating impact of federal policies on Native American communities, including loss of homeland, cultural heritage, and lives. It reflects broader themes of colonialism, land greed, and systemic marginalization of indigenous peoples.

Judy Garland (1922–1969), born Frances Ethel Gumm, was an American actress, singer, and vaudevillian whose extraordinary talent and emotional depth made her one of the most iconic entertainers of the 20th century. Rising to fame as Dorothy Gale in The Wizard of Oz (1939), her rendition of “Over the Rainbow” became a timeless anthem. Garland’s career spanned over 40 films, numerous recordings, and legendary concert performances, showcasing her versatile voice and magnetic stage presence. Despite personal struggles with addiction and mental health, exacerbated by a demanding industry, she remained a beloved figure, earning an Academy Juvenile Award, a Golden Globe, and a posthumous Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award. Her legacy endures through her influence on generations of performers and her unforgettable contributions to film and music.
