Between 1971 and 1983, serial killer Robert Hansen is believed to have raped and murdered at least seventeen women in and around Anchorage, Alaska. Known as the Butcher Baker, Hansen became known for taking some of his victims out into the Alaskan wilderness and “hunting” them for sport, and at least two films–2007’s Naked Fear and 2013’s The Frozen Ground–have been based on his exploits. 13 O’Clock Episode 348 LIVE: The Boca Town Center Murders

Boca Raton, Florida is an affluent city about 45 miles north of Miami, known for its luxurious beaches and upscale malls. But one of these shopping meccas, the Boca Town Center, became notorious in 2007 for something far more tragic: a series of kidnappings and murders that remain unsolved to this day. Randi Gorenberg was shot in the course of a suspected robbery and dumped out of her SUV in brought daylight, and only a few months later, Nancy Bochicchio and her seven-year-old daughter Joey were abducted from the mall parking lot in the middle of the afternoon and later found murdered in their vehicle. Suspects in the crimes include fugitive gang member Michel Berrera and deceased serial killer Israel Keyes, but the cases are still open and under investigation. Join Tom and Jenny on this harrowing and horrifying dive into Florida true crime on episode 348.

13 O’Clock Episode 346 LIVE: Investigative Journalist Gary Webb, the CIA, and the Crack Epidemic

Investigative journalist Gary Webb was at the center of an explosive exposé back in the 1990s. In his famed “Dark Alliance” series, published in 1996, Webb uncovered evidence that a drug ring in the San Francisco Bay Area was routinely selling crack to LA street gangs, and funneling the money back to the Contras in Nicaragua in the 1980s, all with the knowledge and perhaps help of the CIA. Though the claims were controversial at the time, some of them were later vindicated. Webb eventually turned his series into a book in 1998, which won several awards, but sadly, he would be found dead in 2004, the victim of an apparent suicide. The fact that he had died from two gunshots to the head gave some people pause, though, and there are still some who believe that Gary Webb was murdered for the information he revealed to the public. Webb’s story was made into a film called Kill the Messenger in 2014, starring Jeremy Renner. Join Tom and Jenny back to the 80s and 90s to examine the origins of the crack epidemic and the possible involvement of the CIA on this conspiratorial episode.

Back in the early 1960s, the scamming Hernández brothers rolled into the poor, isolated village of Yerba Buena, Mexico, and claimed they were prophets of the gods, telling fanciful tales of untold riches for the villagers if only they did whatever the two brothers said. This worked for a while, but when the townsfolk began to notice that they weren’t actually receiving any of the wealth the “prophets” promised, the Hernándezes realized they’d have to up their game. Recruiting a nearby, eighteen-year-old sex worker named Magdalena Solís and using simple magic tricks to pass her off as an ancient and all-powerful Aztec goddess named Cōātlīcue, the scam jumped into high gear once again. That is, until Magdalena started to get her own ideas about who was running the show, leading to one of the most horrific cult murder sprees we’ve ever discussed on 13 O’Clock, one that is truly right out of a horror movie. Join Tom and Jenny as they delve into the bizarre Mexican sex cult that eventually demanded human sacrifice, and discuss the woman at the center of it all, the serial killer sometimes known as The High Priestess of Blood.

The 1980s, it seemed, were the peak decade for scandals involving various televangelists, with all the heavy hitters of the era–Oral Roberts, Robert Tilton, Jimmy Swaggart, Jim and Tammy Faye Bakker–becoming embroiled in various shenanigans, most of which involved the televangelists themselves engaging in behavior that they actually preached against, thereby revealing themselves as unmitigated hypocrites. On this wild and crazy episode, Tom and Jenny delve into three famous televangelist scandals, including those of Ted Haggard, who vocally opposed gay marriage despite having relations with a male masseur and also taking crystal meth; Jimmy Swaggart, whose holier-than-thou demeanor was somewhat undercut by him being caught with prostitutes; and the infamous Jim and Tammy Faye Bakker, who were involved in various forms of fraud, on top of Jim engaging in a great deal of sexual misconduct. Cue the hallelujahs and dig out your checkbooks, we’re about to dive into some hypocritical hullabaloo on this spiritually bankrupt installment of 13 O’Clock.

Billy Milligan, otherwise known as The Campus Rapist, committed a series of at least three sexual assaults in the 1970s, and is further suspected of at least two later murders. His case is especially notable, however, because after he was caught, he became the first person to use his diagnosis of multiple personality disorder–now known as dissociative identity disorder–to argue successfully that two of his alternate personalities committed the crimes without the “core” personality being aware of it. Milligan would spend over a decade in various psychiatric hospitals before his release in 1991, and would eventually become the inspiration for M. Night Shyamalan’s 2016 film Split, as well as the subject of the four-part, 2021 Netflix documentary series, Monsters Inside: The 24 Faces of Billy Milligan.

13 O’Clock Episode 341 LIVE: The Mysterious Disappearance of Louis Le Prince

Somewhat forgotten French artist Louis Le Prince may not be a household name nowadays, but his contribution to world culture is undeniably massive: he is thought to be the first person to have captured a moving picture on film, and is thus known in film history circles as “The Father of Cinematography.” This would obviously be enough to cement his legacy all by itself, but the man seems better known today for his mysterious disappearance after boarding a train for Paris in 1890, a vanishing act that is still unsolved more than a century later. The reasons for his disappearance range from suicide to fratricide to an assassination attempt by someone paid by none other than Thomas Edison, as Edison did indeed patent a moving picture camera of his own, claiming to have invented it, not long after Le Prince went missing. Rewind the projector to the earliest days of moviemaking and double-dealing on this eerie installment of 13 O’Clock.

On this terrifying but grimly inspiring episode, Tom and Jenny discuss three cases of people who survived seemingly impossible ordeals, such as famed “sea orphan” Terry Jo Duperrault, who was eleven years old when she survived 84 hours alone at sea after the murder of her entire family; Juliane Koepcke, who fell 10,000 feet from a disintegrating plane into the middle of the dense Peruvian jungle where she endured another eleven days before being found; and Mary Vincent, who survived being raped and having her arms cut off by a brutal killer.

Back in 1978, a dude appeared as an eligible bachelor on the popular TV show The Dating Game; he was described as a “successful photographer” who also enjoyed motorcycling and skydiving. He actually won a date with that episode’s bachelorette, but she later refused to go through with the date, admitting she found him creepy. And boy, did she hit that nail right on the head, because it turns out that the guy happened to be Rodney Alcala, a serial killer who would ultimately be convicted of eight murders and be suspected in more than a hundred more. Join Tom and Jenny as they break down the case of this butchering bachelor on a deadly date of an episode 339.
