13 O’Clock Episode 364: Florida Killer Gerard John Schaefer

Though he’s not all that well known nowadays, likely serial killer Gerard John Schaefer was once called one of the sickest killers in the country by an FBI agent who worked his case. Ultimately convicted of “only” two murders in 1973, authorities suspect he may be responsible for as many as 26 more; Schaefer himself claimed that number to be more than 80. Working as a sheriff’s deputy in Florida, Schaefer easily picked up his victims under the guise of helping them, after which he would bind them, rape them, and either strangle or shoot them. Schaefer himself was murdered by another inmate in 1995, and good riddance, really. Join Tom and Jenny on this Florida-specific tale of horror on a murderous episode 364.

Very recently, the American media has been preoccupied with the case of Carlee Russell, the Alabama woman who claimed to have been abducted in July of 2023, only to later admit she’d made up the whole story. But Carlee’s hoax is not unique, and there have in fact been scores of people who faked their own kidnappings, for reasons ranging from mental illness, attempts at receiving a ransom, avoidance of some unpleasant situation, or simple bids for attention. On this wild episode of 13 O’Clock, Tom and Jenny will discuss several cases of faked abductions, including those of Dr. Mark Salerno, Quinn Gray, Dar Heatherington, Rahmell Pettway, and so-called “runaway bride” Jennifer Wilbanks.

There is perhaps no greater and fiercer love on Earth than that of a mother for her children, so perhaps that’s why it’s always so shocking (and morbidly fascinating) when a mother murders her own kids. On today’s grim episode, Tom and Jenny will be discussing two of the most infamous “killer moms” in the modern era: Susan Smith, who drowned her two sons in a South Carolina lake in 1994 and told authorities she’d been carjacked; and Andrea Yates, a Texas mother who drowned all five of her children in a bathtub after allegedly having an attack of postpartum psychosis, compounded by religious extremism. Way back in May of 2018, we did a show about the Long Island Serial Killer, who at that time was unidentified. However, in July of 2023, authorities dropped a bombshell, informing the media that they had made an arrest in the long-running case: the suspect is 59-year-old architect and family man Rex Heuermann, who is presently being charged with three of the iconic “Gilgo Four” murders, and is suspected in several more. On this up-to-the-minute episode, Tom and Jenny will revisit the intricacies of the LISK case and dive into all the updates about the suspect now in custody.

13 O’Clock Episode 359 LIVE: Lethal Victorian Ladies – Mary Pearcey and Amelia Dyer

Anyone who’s into true crime knows that women can be every bit as vicious as men, and on this particular episode, Tom and Jenny will be discussing two of history’s most notorious female murderers. First, we’ll talk about 19th-century killer Mary Pearcey, who brutally slaughtered a woman and a baby and has also been put forward as a candidate for Jack the Ripper. Then we’ll tackle the case of perhaps the most prolific female serial killer ever, baby farmer Amelia Dyer, also known as the Ogress of Reading. Dyer is believed to have slain between 200 and 400 infants over a period spanning from 1869 to 1896. Settle in for these two tales of terror on a deadlier-of-the-species edition of 13 O’Clock.

13 O’Clock Episode 357 LIVE: Operation Midnight Climax

Most everyone has heard of MKUltra, the CIA’s top-secret mind-control research program that started in the 1950s. But one of the more interesting and scandalous sub-projects that fell under the MKUltra umbrella was Operation Midnight Climax, which began in 1954. This “study” sought to determine the effects of LSD on unsuspecting individuals, and particularly the outcome of the administered drug when mixed with sex. During the experiment’s tenure, sex workers were paid by the CIA to lure random patrons off the street, dose them with LSD and various other substances without their knowledge, have sex with them, and then see if they could get the men to confess their deepest and darkest secrets, or even persuade them to engage in illegal activity. The encounters were all monitored by CIA operatives from behind two-way glass. Join Tom and Jenny as they travel down another disturbing conspiratorial rabbit hole on this trippy and troublesome episode of 13 O’Clock.

13 O’Clock Episode 354 LIVE: The Kidnapping of Patty Hearst

In 1974, publishing heiress Patricia “Patty” Hearst was abducted from her Berkeley, California apartment by a group of militants known as the Symbionese Liberation Army. Throughout her time with this group, she changed her name to Tania and participated in several violent crimes, including armed bank robbery, but was eventually arrested and imprisoned. She claimed, however, that she had not been going along willingly with the SLA, but had instead been threatened and brainwashed by them into doing their bidding. While widespread public sympathies (and probably the wealth and prominence of her family)ensured that she would eventually have her sentence commuted, there are those who believe that Patty joined the SLA of her own volition. Was Patricia simply a “rebel in search of a cause,” lashing back against her privileged upbringing, or was she forced into following the group’s agenda? Or was it, as some have argued, a classic case of Stockholm syndrome? Dive into the controversy on this revolutionary episode of 13 O’Clock.

13 O’Clock Episode 352 LIVE: Brenda Spencer – The “I Don’t Like Mondays” Shooting

School shootings are depressingly common nowadays, but back in 1979, they were practically unheard of. And though many people may not be aware of it, the first “modern” type of school shooting to take place in the United States was perpetrated by a slight, red-haired, sixteen-year-old girl named Brenda Spencer, who decided on one January morning to open fire on Cleveland Elementary School across the street from her house, killing two and wounding nine others. Famously, when asked for her reasons for committing such a horrible crime, she apparently answered, “I don’t like Mondays. This livens up the day.” This callous phrase would become immortalized by the Irish rock band The Boomtown Rats, whose chart-topping song “I Don’t Like Mondays” was inspired by the heinous rampage of Brenda Spencer. Join Tom and Jenny as we delve into more true crime on a bleak and baffling episode 352.

If you lived in the United States in the 2000s, it was hard to avoid seeing those infamous commercials for Subway, in which a guy named Jared Fogle claimed to have lost nearly 250 pounds by eating a diet largely consisting of Subway sandwiches. The ads were so successful that the restaurant chain’s revenues increased dramatically during the long-running campaign, and Jared himself became so famous that he was parodied on South Park, appeared on Saturday Night Live, made cameos in two Sharknado movies, and became a multi-millionaire. But then, several years into the relationship between Jared and Subway, it was discovered that Jared…well, liked them young, let’s put it that way. REALLY young. The scumbag was eventually outed by a woman he’d sent disgusting texts to, and subsequently convicted of numerous crimes; he remains in prison to this day. Make yourself a sandwich and settle in for the appalling story of the downfall of one of America’s most beloved fast food spokesmen on a woeful and weighty episode 351.

13 O’Clock Episode 350 LIVE: Revisiting the Hwaseong Serial Murders (Solved)

Way back on episode 151, we discussed the then-unsolved Hwaseong serial murders that took place in South Korea between 1986 and 1994, which were the basis for the awesome 2003 Bong Joon-ho film Memories of Murder. Since we did the show, however, the case has actually been solved: the crimes were evidently perpetrated by serial killer Lee Choon-jae, who was sent to prison in 1994 for murdering his sister-in-law but cannot be prosecuted for the numerous Hwaseong crimes because of Korea’s statute of limitations. Join Tom and Jenny on this fascinating revisit to a lesser-known serial killer case on episode 350.
