13 O’Clock Episode 416: Far Right Terrorist Anders Behring Breivik

Anders Behring Breivik, a Norwegian far-right extremist, committed two devastating attacks on July 22, 2011, in Norway. First, he detonated a car bomb in Oslo’s government quarter, killing eight people and causing extensive damage. Following this, he traveled to the island of Utøya, where he carried out a mass shooting at a Labour Party youth camp, killing 69 people, many of whom were teenagers. These coordinated attacks were motivated by his extremist anti-Muslim and anti-immigrant beliefs. Breivik’s actions shocked Norway and the world, highlighting the lethal potential of radical ideologies and prompting discussions on counter-terrorism, security, and the dangers of far-right extremism.

The 2019 Walmart shooting in El Paso, Texas, occurred on August 3, 2019. A gunman opened fire at a Walmart store, killing 23 people and injuring 22 others. The attack was carried out by a 21-year-old suspect who traveled from the Dallas area to El Paso. The shooter posted a manifesto online expressing anti-immigrant and white nationalist views, indicating that the attack was racially motivated, targeting Hispanic people. This tragic event is considered one of the deadliest mass shootings in U.S. history and has been classified as an act of domestic terrorism. The shooting prompted widespread condemnation and calls for stronger gun control measures.

13 O’Clock Episode 414: Robert Ben Rhoades – The Truck Stop Killer

Robert Ben Rhoades, known as the Truck Stop Killer, is an American serial killer and rapist who terrorized the highways of the United States during the late 1980s and early 1990s. A long-haul truck driver, Rhoades used his job to traverse the country, abducting, torturing, and murdering victims in his mobile torture chamber—a specially modified sleeper cab in his truck. His crimes came to light in 1990 when a police officer discovered a handcuffed woman in his truck during a routine traffic stop. Rhoades was subsequently arrested and linked to multiple murders. He was convicted and sentenced to life imprisonment without the possibility of parole. His exact number of victims remains unknown, but investigators believe he could be responsible for as many as fifty deaths.

13 O’Clock Episode 413: Ronald DeFeo Jr. – The Real Amityville Horror

Ronald DeFeo Jr. was the perpetrator of a notorious mass murder that took place on November 13, 1974, in Amityville, New York. DeFeo, 23 years old at the time, murdered his entire family: his parents, Ronald DeFeo Sr. and Louise DeFeo, and his four siblings, Dawn, Allison, Marc, and John Matthew, as they slept in their home. The victims were shot with a .35 caliber Marlin rifle. DeFeo initially claimed that the killings were carried out by a mob hitman, but his story quickly unraveled. He later confessed to the murders, stating that he had heard voices urging him to kill his family. The case gained widespread attention and eventually inspired the book and subsequent film adaptations of The Amityville Horror, which portrayed the family’s house as haunted. In his trial, DeFeo’s defense attempted to plead insanity, claiming that he heard voices that compelled him to commit the murders. However, he was found guilty of six counts of second-degree murder and was sentenced to six concurrent sentences of 25 years to life in prison. Ronald DeFeo Jr. died in custody on March 12, 2021.

Archibald Hall, aka Roy Fontaine and also known as the “Killer Butler” or “Monster Butler,” was a Scottish serial killer active in the late 1970s. Born in 1924, Hall led a double life as a charming and sophisticated butler while simultaneously engaging in criminal activities, including theft and murder. His victims included former employers and associates, whom he killed either for personal gain or to silence them. Hall’s reign of terror came to an end in 1978 when he was arrested and subsequently convicted of multiple murders. He spent the rest of his life in prison, where he died in 2002. His story is a chilling reminder of the potential for evil to hide behind a veneer of respectability and charm.

13 O’Clock Episode 410: The Turpin Family and Their House of Horrors

The Turpin case, which came to light in January 2018, involved the severe abuse and imprisonment of 13 siblings by their parents, David and Louise Turpin, in Perris, California. The children, ranging in age from 2 to 29, were discovered living in squalid conditions, malnourished, and chained to their beds. The abuse, which had persisted for years, was uncovered when one of the siblings, a 17-year-old girl, escaped and alerted authorities. The parents were subsequently arrested and charged with numerous counts of torture, false imprisonment, child abuse, and cruelty to dependent adults. In 2019, they were sentenced to life in prison with the possibility of parole after 25 years. The case drew widespread media attention and raised critical questions about the effectiveness of child protective services and the ability of children to seek help in abusive situations.

Lucy Letby, a neonatal nurse in the United Kingdom, gained national notoriety as a convicted murderer responsible for the deaths of multiple infants under her care. Employed at the Countess of Chester Hospital, Letby was initially trusted to care for the most vulnerable patients—premature and sick newborns. However, suspicions arose as an unusual number of infant deaths and unexplained health deteriorations occurred during her shifts. Following a meticulous investigation, Letby was found guilty of deliberately harming these infants through various means, including the administration of lethal doses of insulin and injecting air into their bloodstream. Her actions shocked the medical community and the public, leading to widespread discussions about hospital safety, oversight, and the psychological profiling of medical professionals.

Shad Thyrion, a 24-year-old resident of Green Bay, Wisconsin, was brutally murdered on February 23, 2022. The gruesome nature of the crime sent shockwaves through the community and garnered national attention. Shad’s dismembered body was discovered in the basement of his parents’ home, leading to a swift investigation by local authorities. Taylor Schabusiness, a 25-year-old woman, was arrested and charged with the murder after evidence, including bloody clothing and body parts, was found linking her to the crime. Schabusiness almost immediately admitted to the killing, revealing disturbing details about the events leading to Thyrion’s death. The case highlighted issues of mental health and substance abuse, as Schabusiness had a history of both. Shad Thyrion’s tragic death left his family and friends devastated, and the community mourned the loss of a young life taken in such a violent manner. Leopold and Loeb, two wealthy and highly intelligent University of Chicago students, shocked the nation in 1924 with their murder of 14-year-old Bobby Franks in what they claimed was an attempt to commit the “perfect crime.” Nathan Leopold, 19, and Richard Loeb, 18, both from affluent families, meticulously planned and executed the abduction and killing, believing their superior intellects would enable them to evade justice. However, a key piece of evidence, Leopold’s distinctive eyeglasses found near the body, led to their swift arrest. Their trial drew immense media attention, particularly due to the defense mounted by renowned attorney Clarence Darrow, who argued against the death penalty on grounds of their mental states and the influence of Nietzsche’s philosophy. Ultimately, the pair received life sentences plus 99 years, with Loeb dying in prison in 1936 and Leopold being released on parole in 1958. The case remains infamous for its chilling combination of privilege, intelligence, and amorality.
