From 1978 to 1995, 16 mail bombs were sent to several different targets, including employees at universities, computer stores, and airlines. These bombs, attributed to a suspect nicknamed the Unabomber, killed three people and injured 23 others. After mounting one of their most costly investigations, one that lasted 17 years, the FBI finally apprehended a reclusive loner named Ted Kaczynski, who had been living in a remote cabin in Montana with no electricity or running water. Looking into Kaczynski’s past, though, revealed something surprising: the guy was a genius, a brilliant mathematician who had graduated from Harvard and the University of Michigan with advanced degrees, and had taught at UC Berkeley for a short time. But it appears that despite his gargantuan intellect, Ted’s mental state didn’t seem to be in the best shape, as he gradually became a sort of anti-technological terrorist, railing about the evils of leftism and the industrialized world in his so-called Unabomber Manifesto. Join Tom and Jenny as they delve into the mind of this would-be supervillain on an explosive episode 324.
