Another lesser-known serial killer who is nonetheless still notorious in his former hunting grounds of Provincetown, Massachusetts, Tony Costa, known as the Cape Cod Vampire, is suspected of killing and dismembering between four and eight women in the late 1960s and was compared to Jack the Ripper by no less a celebrity than Kurt Vonnegut, who lived on Cape Cod at the time and was fascinated with the crimes. On this episode of 13 O’Clock, we’ll dive into the case of the monster who partially inspired American Horror Story: Red Tide.

Between 1967 and 1969, seven girls and women between the ages of 13 and 21 were abducted, raped, tortured, and savagely murdered in the Ann Arbor/Ypsilanti area of Michigan (though one of the related murders took place in Salinas, California). The killer, variously known as the Ypsilanti Ripper, the Michigan Murderer, and the Co-Ed Killer, turned out to (allegedly) be a man by the name of John Norman Collins (later John Norman Chapman), a seemingly charming young psychopath who apparently had a bizarre hatred for women with pierced ears and women on their periods. The monster is currently serving a life sentence for only one of his crimes, but is suspected of several more, despite his claims of innocence. On this episode, Tom and Jenny will discuss the brief but horrific criminal career of one of the most cold-blooded serial killers in American history, a man whose pathology and victim profile resembled a sort of proto-Ted Bundy.
