The four-month reign of terror was the subject of a well-known cult film of the 70s called The Town That Dreaded Sundown (which was remade in 2014), but the true story is far more chilling. It’s a serial killer extravaganza on this horrific installment! Tom and Jenny are looking into a suspected and infamous serial killer case that is still ongoing. In December of 2010, while looking for a missing person in Long Island, New York, police stumbled across four bodies in burlap sacks, and a few months later, discovered six more nearby. The unknown perpetrator known as the Long Island Serial Killer, the Gilgo Beach Killer, or the Craigslist Ripper is thought to be responsible for between ten to sixteen murders in and around Long Island between the years of 1996 to 2010, and may still be operating today. Tune in as we discuss what is known about the case so far, and also have a listen to our news segment, in which we not only give the latest updates on recently apprehended Golden State Killer suspect Joseph DeAngelo, but also talk a little bit about recently deceased British serial killer Dennis Nilsen, as well as have a brief discussion about the weirdly specific jobs that serial killers seem attracted to. Yes, the scumbag’s name is Joseph DeAngelo and he is currently in custody, so far charged with eight counts of murder in the horrific crime spree that terrorized California from 1976 through 1986. To celebrate the capture of this long-sought-after criminal, 13 O’Clock is doing an update and revisit of the case, since our first episode about the rapist and murderer caused so much interest. First up is the elusive Jack the Stripper, responsible for several murders of prostitutes in London spanning the years from 1959 to 1965. Then we’ll be talking about the mysterious Bible John, who murdered at least three women in Glasgow in 1968 and 1969 after meeting them at one particular dance hall, but who may be tied in to one of Scotland’s most prolific serial killers. First up (well, about eighteen minutes into the show, haha), we discuss the infamous disappearance of three lighthouse keepers from Flannan Isles Lighthouse in the Outer Hebrides in 1900. On our second segment, we talk about the tragic events of early 2013, when a young woman named Elisa Lam went missing from her LA hotel, and worries about her fate mounted after some eerie elevator footage showed her behaving in a very strange fashion. Days later, her body was found in a large water tank on the hotel’s roof. Was she the victim of murder, suicide, or a tragic accident? Or was there some other even more sinister reason for her bizarre death? In 2006, Rob and Vicki Graves bought a beautiful restored mansion sitting on 18 acres, known as Fox Hollow Farm. The price was right, and the couple couldn’t believe their luck. But then, paranormal activity allegedly began to occur: They would hear unexplained knocking, feel presences, and see disturbing apparitions around the property. If Fox Hollow Farm is indeed haunted, as its current residents claim, then there is a very good reason. In 1981, four people were brutally slain in cabin 28 at the Keddie Resort in California. And in 1985 and 2000, the bodies of four unidentified females were discovered in 55-gallon drums in Allenstown, New Hampshire. On this grisly episode of 13 O’Clock, Jenny is discussing two infamous crimes: the Keddie Murders and the Bear Brook Murders, the first of which is still officially unsolved, but the second of which has had some interesting developments in the past two years. On the News segment, she’ll also be talking about Russia’s infamous “Werewolf” serial killer, who has recently gone on trial again for confessing to many, many more murders than it was originally thought he committed (which was already a lot). Ever since the late 1990s, there have been a bunch of strange disappearances and deaths of college-age white men that have taken place in 11 different states in the northern half of the U.S. In almost all cases, when the bodies are eventually found, the deaths are ruled as accidental drownings. But two investigators, Kevin Gannon and Anthony Duarte, believe that there might be a serial killer, or even a gang of serial killers, responsible for the deaths of these young men. On this episode, Tom and Jenny return to the true crime well and examine the mysterious Smiley Face Murder Theory and weigh the evidence on both sides: were these men murdered by a psycho or psychos? Or did they just accidentally drown after drinking too much? Put on a happy face and settle in for the criminally fascinating episode 68.
