Episode 290 LIVE: The Death of Azaria Chamberlain (The Dingo Ate My Baby Case)

Most people, particularly those who grew up during the 1980s, are familiar with the pop culture phrase, “A dingo ate my baby!” What many people may not know is that this line, often used as a joke, refers to a very real and unbelievably tragic event. Back in 1980, at Uluru in the Northern Territory of Australia, the Chamberlain family was on a camping trip when the unimaginable happened: a dingo apparently nosed its way into the tent where nine-week-old Azaria Chamberlain was sleeping and carried the infant off. The body was never found, though some of the child’s clothing was eventually discovered. As if that event wasn’t horrible enough, the media, a large segment of the public, and the authorities came to believe that the baby’s mother Lindy had actually murdered the infant and used the dingo story as a coverup. This belief — later called into question — led to a conviction and a prison sentence, and might be perhaps one of the greatest miscarriages of justice in Australian legal history. 13 O’Clock Episode 288 LIVE: Sid Vicious and Nancy Spungen

The mid to late 1970s were the heyday of punk rock, and one of the people who most embodied the nihilistic and self-destructive allure of the punk subculture was Sex Pistols bassist Sid Vicious. A drug addict from a broken home, Sid’s anarchic attitude and unpredictable (and sometimes violent) behavior became synonymous with punk rebellion, but his already disordered life spiralled even further out of his control when he met American groupie and sex worker Nancy Spungen. The two became inseparable, and seemed to have exacerbated each other’s worst tendencies. It all ended in tragedy in October of 1978, when Nancy was found dead from a single stab wound in the infamous Chelsea Hotel in New York City; Sid was so far gone on drugs he couldn’t remember if he had killed her or not. Though he was arrested for her murder, he died of a heroin overdose before he was ever tried, and to this day, no one is entirely sure what exactly happened to Nancy Spungen. Sadly, though, fast food restaurants have seen their share of violence, and on tonight’s livestream, we’ll discuss a handful of these appalling cases, including the 1991 Luby’s massacre in Killeen, Texas; the 1984 McDonald’s massacre in San Diego, California; the infamous Fast Food Killer, Paul Dennis Reid, who murdered seven people across three restaurants, and more. Episode 285 LIVE: James Ruppert and the Easter Sunday Massacre

It was Easter Sunday, 1975, in Hamilton, Ohio. The Ruppert family was spending it as many families did, preparing a festive meal in the kitchen and having an Easter egg hunt on the front lawn. Suddenly, unassuming James Ruppert, who had spent the previous night drinking in his favorite bar, emerged from an upstairs bedroom bearing several firearms, and began to open fire on his celebrating family members, ultimately killing eleven people, including several children. What made this supposedly quiet man snap and wipe out his family? Join Tom and Jenny on this disturbing tale of mass murder on a tragic and terrifying episode 285.

13 O’Clock Episode 281 LIVE: The Lindbergh Kidnapping

In 1932, the baby son of famed aviator Charles Lindbergh was kidnapped from his nursery, a ransom note left in his place. Over the next several weeks, a series of further ransom notes arrived from the kidnapper or kidnappers, sending investigators and family members on a wild goose chase. Tragically, though the ransom was paid, the baby was found dead two months after his abduction. By tracking the ransom money, detectives were eventually able to arrest and convict a German carpenter by the name of Bruno Hauptmann, but over the years, some armchair theorists have come to believe that Hauptmann didn’t work alone, and that an organized gang lay behind the horrifying crime. Join Tom and Jenny as they delve into one of the most infamous cases of the 20th century on a sad and shocking episode 281.

13 O’Clock Episode 278 LIVE: The Zodiac Killer Revisited

Easily one of the best known true crime cases in American history, the series of horrific murders committed by an unidentified serial killer known only as the Zodiac has baffled law enforcement and armchair investigators since the murders occurred in the late 1960s. 13 O’Clock originally did an episode about the case back in September of 2018. But just in the past several months, new allegations have come to light; not only has one of the previously unsolved and very famous Zodiac ciphers been decoded at last, but an independent team of investigators known as the Case Breakers has made the bold claim that they have finally identified the man responsible for at least five murders in northern California in 1968 and 1969, stating that the culprit was a man named Gary Francis Poste, a former house painter who had a previous arrest for domestic violence and died in 2018. As rare as serial killers are, the fact that there are billions of people in the world means that, statistically, there are way MORE serial killers than most of us are likely comfortable with. Everyone has heard of the “big names,” of course, but what about the alarming number of these monsters that slip through the cracks and become largely forgotten, even though their crimes are no less horrific than those of their more infamous brethren? On tonight’s installment, Tom and Jenny discuss five serial killers whose names you might not know, but who are every bit as terrible as the more familiar rogues’ gallery. We’ll talk about Randy Kraft, a Californian serial killer convicted of 16 murders and suspected of at least 51 others; the Hungarian Béla Kiss, thought to have murdered at least 24 young women; Robert Christian Hansen, who murdered between 17 and 21 victims near Anchorage, Alaska; “Bayou Strangler” Ronald Dominique, a serial killer and rapist who murdered at least 23 men and boys in Louisiana; and Gerard Schaefer, who was convicted of two murders in 1973, but was suspected of more than thirty. 13 O’Clock Episode 276 LIVE: The Pennsylvania Torso Murders, aka The Murder Swamp Killings

Most everyone who knows something about American crime has heard of the Cleveland Torso Murders, a series of ghastly mutilation-style homicides that plagued the Kingsbury Run shanty town in the 1930s. But what is less well known is that right around the same time period, there were several very similar killings taking place not far away, in western Pennsylvania, where horrifically dismembered and occasionally burned bodies would turn up with alarming frequency, sometimes in abandoned boxcars, and sometimes in a patch of godforsaken land known as Murder Swamp or Hell’s Half Acre. While contemporary and modern investigators believe there may have been some connection between the Cleveland crimes and some of the Pennsylvania ones, others are not so sure, attributing the PA slayings to mafia-style killings by the Black Hand, or the results of warring factions of bootleggers in the days of Prohibition. Keep a barf bag handy for this one, because we’re about to go full-on grim gorefest on a blood-soaked episode 276.

13 O’Clock Episode 271 LIVE: The Mercy Brown Vampire Incident & the Bridget Cleary Fairy Murder

It’s Halloween week, 13 O’Clockers, so we’ve got two creepy historical incidents to chill your blood with! First, we’ll be discussing the curious case of Mercy Brown, sometimes known as the Last Vampire in New England, who was exhumed in the late 19th century because the townsfolk believed she was undead and feeding on her family members. Then we’ll discuss the bizarre Irish murder of Bridget Cleary, whose husband killed her in a horrific manner because he seemed to genuinely believe she was not actually his wife, but had been replaced by a fairy changeling. Turn down the lights, curl up with a blanket and your beverage of choice, and spend some spooky time with Tom and Jenny on a live pre-Halloween hootenanny on episode 271.

13 O’Clock Episode 268 LIVE: Elliot Rodger and the Incel Community

Back in 2014, a young college student in Isla Vista, California posted a chilling YouTube video in which he detailed his violent plan for essentially punishing the world because women wouldn’t sleep with him. He then went on a rampage, stabbing, shooting, and hitting pedestrians with his car, ending up killing 6 people and wounding 14. Elliot Rodger then became the face and at times a bizarre “saint” to the online incel community, a group of (mostly) men who feel entitled to sexual favors from women and further feel justified in their hatred and violent rage when they don’t get it. In fact, Rodger’s appalling crime even became the horrifying inspiration for several incel killers to follow, such as Chris Harper-Mercer, Nikolas Cruz, and Alek Minassian. Tom and Jenny talk about the Isla Vista killings, about Elliot Rodger and his delusional manifesto, and about the larger online “manosphere,” segments of which actually laud crimes of this type as justifiable revenge. It’s a literal battle of the sexes on a live and inebriated episode 268.
