13 O’Clock Episode 378: The Oakland County Child Killer

Between February of 1976 and March of 1977, at least four children (and possibly more) were abducted, held captive for a time, and then murdered in Oakland County, Michigan by a person or persons unknown. In the decades since the crimes occurred, several disturbing theories about the case have sprung up, including the notion that the killer had a sadomasochistic slave who wrote to the police to tell them about the crimes, the possibility that the children were sacrificed in occult rituals on particular dates of significance on the pagan calendar, and the hypothesis that their deaths were tied to a pedophile ring on North Fox Island in Lake Michigan. Between September 2003 and July 2004, a serial killer stalked the streets of Seoul, South Korea. This offender, later dubbed the Raincoat Killer, bludgeoned, dismembered, and possibly cannibalized at least twenty victims, most of them sex workers or wealthy older people. When the perpetrator was caught, he turned out to be a once-married father of one, Yoo Young-chul, a career criminal with a violent hatred of women and a particular resentment for the rich. 13 O’Clock Episode 374: The Weird World of Michael Jackson (Abuse Allegations and Death Controversy)

Michael Jackson was one of the most successful and beloved pop stars the world has ever seen, and his sudden death in 2009 at the age of 50 shocked his millions of fans. But as most people know, long before his controversial death, Jackson’s life was plagued with rumors and scandals, from the relatively harmless—such as the allegations that bleached his skin, or that he tried to buy the bones of the “Elephant Man,” Joseph Merrick—to the horrific—namely, that he systematically groomed and abused several young boys over the course of his career. On this episode of 13 O’Clock, Tom and Jenny dive into the fray, discussing the 1993 and 2005 trials charging Jackson with sexual abuse, as well as the conviction of his doctor Conrad Murray, who was found guilty of involuntary manslaughter for administering the drugs that ended Jackson’s life.

13 O’Clock Episode 370: Serial Killer Tony Costa – The Cape Cod Vampire

Another lesser-known serial killer who is nonetheless still notorious in his former hunting grounds of Provincetown, Massachusetts, Tony Costa, known as the Cape Cod Vampire, is suspected of killing and dismembering between four and eight women in the late 1960s and was compared to Jack the Ripper by no less a celebrity than Kurt Vonnegut, who lived on Cape Cod at the time and was fascinated with the crimes. On this episode of 13 O’Clock, we’ll dive into the case of the monster who partially inspired American Horror Story: Red Tide.

13 O’Clock Episode 368: The Michigan Murders – John Norman Collins, the Ypsilanti Ripper

Between 1967 and 1969, seven girls and women between the ages of 13 and 21 were abducted, raped, tortured, and savagely murdered in the Ann Arbor/Ypsilanti area of Michigan (though one of the related murders took place in Salinas, California). The killer, variously known as the Ypsilanti Ripper, the Michigan Murderer, and the Co-Ed Killer, turned out to (allegedly) be a man by the name of John Norman Collins (later John Norman Chapman), a seemingly charming young psychopath who apparently had a bizarre hatred for women with pierced ears and women on their periods. The monster is currently serving a life sentence for only one of his crimes, but is suspected of several more, despite his claims of innocence. On this episode, Tom and Jenny will discuss the brief but horrific criminal career of one of the most cold-blooded serial killers in American history, a man whose pathology and victim profile resembled a sort of proto-Ted Bundy.

13 O’Clock Episode 364: Florida Killer Gerard John Schaefer

Though he’s not all that well known nowadays, likely serial killer Gerard John Schaefer was once called one of the sickest killers in the country by an FBI agent who worked his case. Ultimately convicted of “only” two murders in 1973, authorities suspect he may be responsible for as many as 26 more; Schaefer himself claimed that number to be more than 80. Working as a sheriff’s deputy in Florida, Schaefer easily picked up his victims under the guise of helping them, after which he would bind them, rape them, and either strangle or shoot them. Schaefer himself was murdered by another inmate in 1995, and good riddance, really. Join Tom and Jenny on this Florida-specific tale of horror on a murderous episode 364.

13 O’Clock Episode 363: People Who Faked Their Own Kidnappings

Very recently, the American media has been preoccupied with the case of Carlee Russell, the Alabama woman who claimed to have been abducted in July of 2023, only to later admit she’d made up the whole story. But Carlee’s hoax is not unique, and there have in fact been scores of people who faked their own kidnappings, for reasons ranging from mental illness, attempts at receiving a ransom, avoidance of some unpleasant situation, or simple bids for attention. On this wild episode of 13 O’Clock, Tom and Jenny will discuss several cases of faked abductions, including those of Dr. Mark Salerno, Quinn Gray, Dar Heatherington, Rahmell Pettway, and so-called “runaway bride” Jennifer Wilbanks.

13 O’Clock Episode 362: Killer Moms – Susan Smith and Andrea Yates

There is perhaps no greater and fiercer love on Earth than that of a mother for her children, so perhaps that’s why it’s always so shocking (and morbidly fascinating) when a mother murders her own kids. On today’s grim episode, Tom and Jenny will be discussing two of the most infamous “killer moms” in the modern era: Susan Smith, who drowned her two sons in a South Carolina lake in 1994 and told authorities she’d been carjacked; and Andrea Yates, a Texas mother who drowned all five of her children in a bathtub after allegedly having an attack of postpartum psychosis, compounded by religious extremism. Hold your children close and settle in for a horrifying and heartbreaking episode 362.

13 O’Clock Episode 361 LIVE: Long Island Serial Killer Update

Way back in May of 2018, we did a show about the Long Island Serial Killer, who at that time was unidentified. However, in July of 2023, authorities dropped a bombshell, informing the media that they had made an arrest in the long-running case: the suspect is 59-year-old architect and family man Rex Heuermann, who is presently being charged with three of the iconic “Gilgo Four” murders, and is suspected in several more. On this up-to-the-minute episode, Tom and Jenny will revisit the intricacies of the LISK case and dive into all the updates about the suspect now in custody.
