13 O’Clock Episode 96 – Robert Stack Attack! A Wide-Ranging Tribute to Unsolved Mysteries

One of our favorite TV shows of the 80s and 90s was Unsolved Mysteries, particularly during the Robert Stack era. As the show was such a beloved touchstone for us and inspired us to make the 13 O’Clock Podcast the crazy combination of paranormal, true crime, and weird history stories that it is, we thought it only fitting to discuss this cultural icon on our own little show. On this tangent-filled and far-reaching episode, we get into a brief history of Unsolved Mysteries, some fun facts about the show, and a few of our favorite featured cases, including some that the show helped solve. We also weave in digressions about D.B. Cooper, Son of Sam, the Beale ciphers, the inaccuracy of witness testimony, and much, much more! All this, plus some awesome listener-contributed ghost stories in our news segment! So sit back and listen to this homage to a childhood favorite, and you may be able to help solve the mystery presented on episode 96.

13 O’Clock Episode 94 – A Haunting Review: House of the Dead

It’s paranormal time again, and we’re returning to that wonderful wellspring of supernatural hijinks known as A Haunting. This time, we’re discussing the case of Billy Bean, whose story was told on episode 5 of season 2, titled “House of the Dead.” Billy moved into a house in Glen Burnie, Maryland with his family in 1970 when he was just seven years old, and before too long, some apparently nefarious force began targeting the Beans, causing violent poltergeist activity and the drastic personality change of Billy’s father. Join us as we run down the episode and the case, and also listen with amusement to our news story, in which we lament the darkly hilarious fate of a 2,000-year-old, extremely unlucky Pompeii resident. Poltergeists and demons and ghosts, oh my! It’s a high-spirited episode 94.

13 O’Clock Episode 92 – Spring-Heeled Jack, Mad Gasser, and Devil’s Footprints

Victorian London is terrorized by a diabolical, high-jumping figure with metal claws and eyes of flame. A town in Illinois falls prey to a phantom gasser in the mid-1940s. And an estuary in Devon, England plays host to a very long and mysterious trail of hoofprints that might have been left by Satan himself. On this fun, folkloric episode, Tom and Jenny are discussing three weird cases of possibly paranormal origin: the legend of Spring-Heeled Jack, the Mad Gasser of Mattoon, and the Devil’s Footprints. In our news segment, we’re also giving an update on our old pal the Angry Gay Pope, whose anti-Scientology channel has been the subject of a YouTube ban, and we’re discussing the recent death of renowned parapsychologist Guy Lyon Playfair, famous for his extensive work on the Enfield Poltergeist case. Settle in for a creepy rundown of urban legends, mass hysteria, and more on episode 92.

13 O’Clock Episode 90 – Live Frogs Encased in Rock – Weird Fortean Archaeology

We’re putting on our Indiana Jones hats and digging deep on this episode of 13 O’Clock, which is a whirlwind examination of crazy archaeological and natural history claims that have been used to support young-earth creationism. From living frogs found encased in solid rock, to supposed pterodactyls found in caves in the 1860s; from the Acambaro Figures to the footprints at the Paluxy Riverbed, we’re running through a plethora of pseudo-archaeological finds and various other “Forteana.” All this, plus silly news stories about afterlife malarkey, Easter molestation, and mummified monkeys. Grab your spades and get ready to delve into episode 90.

13 O’Clock Episode 87 – Borley Rectory (Plus Keith Linder Haunting)

On today’s spooky and tangent-filled installment of 13 O’Clock, we’re tackling one of the most famous haunted houses in the world, Borley Rectory. Built in 1862 and investigated by famed paranormal investigator Harry Price, the Victorian-style mansion was allegedly the site of all sorts of supernatural shenanigans, including the apparition of a ghostly nun, a phantom carriage with two headless drivers, numerous reports of footsteps and screams, and bizarre writing that supposedly appeared on the walls asking for help. All this, plus a brief rundown of the Keith Linder Demons in Seattle case, which is in the news again since a new book just came out about it (even though I already wrote one about it back in 2016, called House of Fire and Whispers). Put your haunting hats on and settle by the fire for a spirited discussion on episode 87.

NOTE: If you just want to hear about Borley Rectory, skip ahead to about 26 minutes in; we kinda went off on a bunch of digressions, haha.

13 O’Clock Episode 86 – The Travis Walton UFO Incident (Fire in the Sky)

Back in 1975, logger Travis Walton was working out in an Arizona forest with his colleagues when he reportedly went missing in a flash of blinding light. Police searched for him for five days, but found no trace, and at first thought that maybe his friends had murdered him. But then, Travis returned, and had a bizarre story to explain his absence: he’d been abducted by extraterrestrials. On this episode, Tom and Jenny are discussing the ins and outs of the so-called “Fire in the Sky” incident, which was made into a film in 1993. Was Travis Walton really abducted by aliens or was it all just an elaborate prank? And as a bonus, our news segment features another UFO-related story: the mysterious disappearance of Granger Taylor, who went missing in 1980 after building his own homemade spacecraft and whose case has recently been reopened. Keep watching the skies and keep listening to 13 O’Clock as we blast off into episode 86.

13 O’Clock Episode 84 – The Haunting of Bobby Mackey’s

On this ghostly episode of 13 O’Clock, we’re going back to our recaps of “A Haunting” episodes, and this one is about one of the most famous haunted locations in the United States. Bobby Mackey’s Music World has been a popular Kentucky honky tonk since the late 1970s, but it’s evidently been haunted for as long as anyone can remember. Its alleged former use as a slaughterhouse and a speakeasy, as well as being the site of alleged suicides and at least one gruesome murder, has practically ensured that paranormal activity has often been reported and several ghost hunting teams have conducted investigations of the place. So slap on your ten-gallon hat and climb onto the mechanical bull as we run down the tale of the infamously spirit-infested country and western bar on episode 84.

13 O’Clock Episode 83 – Flannan Isles Lighthouse and the Death of Elisa Lam

We’re talking about two creepy unsolved mysteries on today’s long, slightly drunken, tangent-filled installment! First up (well, about eighteen minutes into the show, haha), we discuss the infamous disappearance of three lighthouse keepers from Flannan Isles Lighthouse in the Outer Hebrides in 1900. Were they swept away by a freak wave, did some foul play befall them, or were they spirited away by ghosts or sea monsters? On our second segment, we talk about the tragic events of early 2013, when a young woman named Elisa Lam went missing from her LA hotel, and worries about her fate mounted after some eerie elevator footage showed her behaving in a very strange fashion. Days later, her body was found in a large water tank on the hotel’s roof. Was she the victim of murder, suicide, or a tragic accident? Or was there some other even more sinister reason for her bizarre death? All this, plus a fun news story about people’s Amazon Alexas seemingly becoming possessed by dark forces, and digressions about the Mammoth Mountain poltergeist, sexbots, the universal Krusselsphere, why you should never go in the ocean for any reason, and much more! Dive into the murky and mysterious waters of the unknown with Tom and Jenny, on episode 83 of 13 O’Clock.

13 O’Clock Episode 82 – Serial Killer Herb Baumeister and the Haunting of Fox Hollow Farm

In 2006, Rob and Vicki Graves bought a beautiful restored mansion sitting on 18 acres, known as Fox Hollow Farm. The price was right, and the couple couldn’t believe their luck. But then, paranormal activity allegedly began to occur: They would hear unexplained knocking, feel presences, and see disturbing apparitions around the property. If Fox Hollow Farm is indeed haunted, as its current residents claim, then there is a very good reason. In the 1990s, the sprawling estate was home to Herb Baumeister, an Indiana businessman who is suspected of murdering more than twenty men and burying some of their remains on the farm. Tune in to this paranormal and true crime story all rolled into one, plus learn about a shitbag Arkasas judge who REALLY abused his bench on our news segment. Ghosts, serial murder, double lives, and predatory authority figures…all this and more on a super-sized episode 82 of 13 O’Clock.
