13 O’Clock Episode 66 – The Bloody Benders

Ah, the good old days, when you could pack up your family and lay claim to hundreds of acres of prairie and set about building a life for yourself through hard work and perseverance. Or, if you happened to pass through Kansas in around 1871 on the way to set up your homestead, you could alternately get your head bashed in and your throat slashed by a “family” of twisted serial killers. On this episode of 13 O’Clock, Tom and Jenny explore one of the darkest corridors of 19th century American history, focusing on the infamous Bloody Benders, a faux family of four murderers who are thought to have brutally killed at least twenty travelers, and also seem to have largely gotten away with it. Hop in your covered wagon for the journey into episode 66, and when you see the Benders’ inn on the side of the Osage Trail, best keep moseying on by.

13 O’Clock Episode 64 – H.H. Holmes: America’s O.G. Serial Killer

You think Jack the Ripper was bad? Well, America had its very own serial killer that was a contemporary of ol’ Jack’s, and in true American fashion, this dude evidently took the whole multiple murder thing and ramped it up to eleven. Dr. H.H. Holmes was not only a bigamist and a shameless con-man, but he also took killing people to a WHOLE other level, according to the stories about him. No one knows exactly how many people Holmes murdered or how much of his story is exaggerated, but according to legend, the three-story building he constructed in Chicago, later known as the Murder Castle, apparently had lots of horrifying modifications like airtight rooms with poison gas valves, a greased chute for quickly sending bodies down to the bowels of the house, and what amounted to a medieval torture chamber in the basement. But how much of this story is true, and how much is tall tale? Check in to the horror hotel with Tom and Jenny, and listen to the unbelievable tale of Victorian madness and mayhem that comprises episode 64.

13 O’Clock Episode 60 – The Cleveland Torso Murders

It’s true crime time again on the show, kids, and today we’re discussing a particularly gruesome and infamous series of unsolved murders that also makes an appearance in Jenny’s brand new book, The Faceless Villain. The Cleveland Torso Murders were exactly what they claim on the tin: they happened in Cleveland in the 1930s, and most of the victims were found in varying states of grisly dismemberment. Many of the victims were never even identified, and the killer never was either, so hopefully that makes you sleep better at night. Gird your loins or other appropriate anatomy, because this one’s a tad icky, and if you’re watching on YouTube, I’ll slap a GROSS PHOTO WARNING right down here. Try to keep all your limbs attached as you settle in for episode 60 of 13 O’Clock.

13 O’Clock Episode 53 – Elizabeth Bathory: The Blood Countess

You know how Count Dracula is usually said to be partially based on Vlad the Impaler? Well, most scholars think that the legendary literary bloodsucker was also based on someone who was arguably even scarier than that: Elizabeth Bathory. The Hungarian countess has become infamous for the horrific torture and murder of anywhere between 35 and 650 young women, and in later years, stories arose that she bathed in virgin blood to retain her youth. Countess Bathory, as a matter of fact, is credited by no less an authority than the Guinness Book of World Records for being the world’s most prolific female serial killer. On this episode of 13 O’Clock, Tom and Jenny delve into the terrifying and crimson-drenched world of the Blood Countess, trying to sort the truth from the myth. Exsanguinate the nearest servants and relax in a tub full of gore (don’t really do that), it’s time for episode 53.

13 O’Clock Episode 45 – Villisca and the Unsolved Axe Murders of the 1910s

The horrifying massacre that took place in Villisca, Iowa in 1912 is among the creepiest mass murders in American history. Eight people — a couple with four children and two young girls who were staying the night — were brutally slaughtered with an axe while they slept, for seemingly no reason whatsoever. The crime was never solved, and what’s worse, that dreadful slaying might not have been the only one. Some researchers point out that there was a disturbing trend of gruesome axe murders going on in the Midwest from the period of 1911 through 1914, and it’s possible that some of these crimes were perpetrated by the same person. On this episode of 13 O’Clock, Tom and Jenny return to the most terrifying corners of the true crime genre to take a look at the infamous Villisca Axe Murders, as well as the disturbing series of similar crimes that terrorized the American heartland in the early twentieth century.

13 O’Clock Episode 40 – The Atlanta Ripper: America’s Forgotten Serial Killer

The Atlanta Ripper is perhaps one of America’s most brutal and prolific serial killers, but also one of its most forgotten, and there is even some controversy over whether he existed at all. Starting around 1909, a series of murders of black and mixed-race women in Atlanta, Georgia suggested that a mysterious murderer was prowling the streets, slashing women’s throats and sending the entire community into a panic. On this episode, Tom and Jenny discuss this tragically unsolved case, delving into the murders themselves as well as the controversies surrounding the killings at the time. America, it seems, had its very own Jack the Ripper, and whoever he was, he’s the subject of our 40th episode.

Well, we WERE gonna go with something more cheerful this episode, since we did creepy necrophiliacs on last week’s show, but NO, we had to go and sort of accidentally do another episode about serial killers (one of whom also happens to be a necrophile, for added fun). Sorry.

On episode 30 of 13 O’Clock, Tom and Jenny cross the pond to discuss infamous British serial killers Peter Sutcliffe (aka The Yorkshire Ripper) and Dennis Nilsen (aka The Kindly Killer). Join us for yet another twisted, rambling, factually dubious gabfest about the worst humanity has to offer, like dudes beating women to death with ball peen hammers and other dudes happily boiling heads in cooking pots and flushing pieces of people down toilets. Yay.

After the show is over, you might want to go hug a puppy or something. Just saying.

13 O’Clock Episode 29 – Loving the Dead: Anatoly Moskvin and Carl Tanzler

Most of us understandably fear death, but there is a very tiny subset of fairly creepy folks out there who literally embrace it. On this episode, Tom and Jenny “dig” into the bizarre, unsettling cases of two confirmed necrophiles: Carl Tanzler (aka Count Carl von Cosel) and Anatoly Moskvin. Neither were killers, but both had a forbidden affinity with the no-longer-living, and their stories are equal parts disturbing and pitiful. In fact, the morbid “love story” between Carl Tanzler and the corpse of Maria Elena Milagro de Hoyos has become the stuff of legend.

The show also features digressions on the excellent Miriam Allen DeFord story “A Death in the Family,” and the wacky world of necrophilia in the animal kingdom. This episode is probably not for the faint of heart; Tom himself becomes so skeeved out by the details of the cases at one point that he entertainingly threatens to abandon the show in utter disgust! So pull up a coffin and settle in for this exploration into the macabre world of the lovers of the dead. You sickos, you. 🙂

13 O’Clock Episode 16 – Dual Dirtbags: Serial Killers Leonard Lake and Charles Ng

Ugh. One serial killer is bad enough, but when two psycho losers team up and begin to realize their sick fantasies of keeping women in a dungeon and killing their friends and neighbors for the hell of it (not to mention shooting babies, for fuck’s sake), then the end result is unspeakable horror and tragedy. On this episode of 13 O’Clock, Tom and Jenny delve into the depraved tale of Leonard Lake and Charles Ng, two murderous creeps whose bizarre friendship resulted in the deaths of at least eleven, but possibly as many as twenty-five, innocent people. Your intrepid hosts have a rambling and possibly error-ridden discussion about this pair of scumbags, during which T & J desperately try to use dark humor as a defense mechanism against the onslaught of monstrosity (with varying results). They then each feel the need to take a nice, long, Silkwood shower. Enjoy?
