Episode 324 LIVE: Ted Kaczynski, The Unabomber

From 1978 to 1995, 16 mail bombs were sent to several different targets, including employees at universities, computer stores, and airlines. These bombs, attributed to a suspect nicknamed the Unabomber, killed three people and injured 23 others. After mounting one of their most costly investigations, one that lasted 17 years, the FBI finally apprehended a reclusive loner named Ted Kaczynski, who had been living in a remote cabin in Montana with no electricity or running water. Looking into Kaczynski’s past, though, revealed something surprising: the guy was a genius, a brilliant mathematician who had graduated from Harvard and the University of Michigan with advanced degrees, and had taught at UC Berkeley for a short time. But it appears that despite his gargantuan intellect, Ted’s mental state didn’t seem to be in the best shape, as he gradually became a sort of anti-technological terrorist, railing about the evils of leftism and the industrialized world in his so-called Unabomber Manifesto. Join Tom and Jenny as they delve into the mind of this would-be supervillain on an explosive episode 324.

13 O’Clock Episode 323 LIVE: Ghosts Who Solved Their Own Murders

It’s a paranormal and a true crime episode all in one, just in time for the lead-up to Halloween! On this spooky installment, we’ll be discussing three cases of ghosts who supposedly solved their own murders: Zona Heaster Shue, a.k.a. The Greenbrier Ghost, who allegedly contacted her mother from beyond the grave and revealed who killed her; the so-called Red Barn Murder, in which a woman dreamed of her stepdaughter’s murder and eventually got the killer caught; and Teresita Basa, who purportedly spoke through a coworker and accused another coworker of the crime. Get into the Halloween mood with these three horrific ghost stories on a murderous and mysterious episode 323.

13 O’Clock Episode 322 LIVE: The Zodiac Killer Revisited (Again)

The Zodiac is easily one of the most infamous unsolved serial killer cases in American history. The unidentified perpetrator murdered at least five victims in the San Francisco Bay area in 1968 and 1969, usually targeting young couples. He also sent numerous communications to police, taunting them about their inability to catch him; many of these letters included odd ciphers, a few of which have yet to be decoded. Though many suspects have been put forward over the years, the case was given a shot in the arm in late 2021 by a group of cold case investigators, who claimed they had identified the Zodiac at last as a man named Gary Francis Poste, who died in 2018. Though law enforcement officials discounted their theory, it got oodles of media attention. And even more recently, in 2020, the famed Z-340 cipher was solved at last, though it contained no substantive information. In September of this year, a suspect named William McDuff Andrew was put forward. And just this month (October 2022), a researcher named Jarett Kobek published a book laying out the case for a previously unknown and very compelling suspect: a California man named Paul Doerr. On this chilling episode, Tom and Jenny will revisit the notorious crimes, and include all the latest updates in the ongoing investigation.

13 O’Clock Episode 319 LIVE: Art Forger Han Van Meegeren

Dutch painter and famed forger Han van Meegeren was an interesting character. Though moderately successful as an original artist in his own right in the early 20th century, Van Meegeren apparently decided there was more money to be made in forging the Old Masters, especially since trends at the time favored modern art like expressionism, surrealism, and cubism (which the artist himself utterly loathed). Van Meegeren, spending years perfecting a complex alchemy of hand-ground pigments and modern chemical aging techniques, began producing copies of works by Frans Hals, Pieter de Hooch, and Gerard ter Borch, but by far his best known forgeries were of paintings by Johannes Vermeer, whose actual surviving works numbered less than forty. Van Meegeren made a fortune passing off his phony Vermeers, and ironically only got caught when one of his fakes ended up in the possession of Hermann Göring, and Van Meegeren was accused of selling Dutch property to the Nazis. But once he established that he’d painted the picture himself, he became a national hero for pulling the wool over the eyes of the Third Reich, although his political leanings aren’t as cut and dried as that statement might suggest. It’s a colorful journey through a world of fabulous fakes on an artistic episode 319.

Episode 315 LIVE: The Toolbox Killers – Lawrence Bittaker and Roy Norris

Strap in, folks, because this is gonna be a rough one. Lawrence Bittaker and Roy Norris were two serial killers and rapists who tortured and murdered at least five teenage girls in Southern California in 1979. Better known as the Toolbox Killers, because of their use of various tools as means of torturing their victims, these two subhumans apparently took great delight in snatching young girls off the street and into their van, nicknamed “Murder Mac,” and doing unspeakable things to them, even recording the victims’ screams on occasion for the killers’ later enjoyment. Both Bittaker and Norris have thankfully dropped dead; sadly, they both died of natural causes instead of getting a little taste of what they inflicted on others. Get ready to delve into a grim and soul-crushing episode 315, and be sure to have the tissues and the blood pressure pills handy, as well as copious amounts of booze; you’re going to need it, trust me.

13 O’Clock Episode 313 LIVE: John George Haigh, The Acid Bath Murderer

John George Haigh was a seemingly respectable middle-class man in 1940s England, working mundane jobs in advertising and finance. What many people would later discover, however, was that Haigh’s humdrum but charming veneer hid the heart of a ruthless serial killer who would target wealthy friends and acquaintances, steal their money, then kill them and dissolve their remains in barrels of sulfuric acid, thus earning him the nickname The Acid Bath Murderer. Haigh was convicted of six slayings, though he claimed to have killed more. Dip into the horror of this true crime saga on a bitter and brutal episode 313.

13 O’Clock Episode 310 LIVE: The Burger Chef and Austin Yogurt Shop Murders

Working in the fast food industry is something of a rite of passage for many American teenagers (and others), but in some tragic cases, these workplaces can turn deadly. In 1978, for example, four employees of a Burger Chef restaurant in Indiana vanished, leaving an empty safe behind. While police initially suspected the workers had stolen the money and taken off, the discovery of their bodies a couple of days later confirmed that the four had been the victims of a kidnapping and murder. Then, in 1991, four teenage girls at a Texas yogurt shop were brutally attacked after closing; two of them were raped, and all were murdered, in a crime that has still never been solved. Take a journey through the darker side of fast food on this workplace horror installment of 13 O’Clock.

13 O’Clock Episode 305 LIVE: Burke and Hare

In Edinburgh, Scotland, in the first half of the 19th century, great progress was being made in the field of anatomy. Only problem was, medical researchers needed cadavers for their studies, and since the law was very strict about which corpses could legally be dissected, there was something of a shortage of materials for doctors and surgeons to use. Thus, the practice of grave robbing began to increase, as people looking for ready cash would dig up fresh bodies and sell them on to medical schools. William Burke and William Hare, though, decided grave robbing was a mug’s game, and figured they’d be able to make much more money if, instead of procuring victims who were already dead, they would simply make their own dead bodies, and cut out the middle man, as it were. Ultimately, Burke and Hare are believed to be responsible for the murders of sixteen people, and their notoriety was so profound that they eventually became the subject of numerous books, plays, and movies, and their practice even led to the coining of a new English word, “burking,” referring to the crime of murdering a person for the purpose of selling the corpse. In the annals of American crime, and certainly during the gangster era of the 1930s, there were few couples as notorious and romanticized as Bonnie and Clyde. Bonnie Parker and Clyde Barrow, along with their gang, traveled throughout the United States from 1931 to 1934, robbing banks, shops, and funeral homes, and killing nine police officers and four civilians during their spree, before being gunned down in an ambush in 1934. Over the years, their myth has only grown in the American consciousness, and the pair have been the subject of numerous films, TV shows, songs, books, and even musicals.
